The Big Bang Theory….

• What is it? and When did it happen?– The Big Bang Theory is an attempt to explain

how our how universe was created and came to existence. The theory says that our universe was created when an infinitely dense an infinitely hot ball of matter cooled off and expanded to become the universe we know today. The cooling and expanding was said to have happened around 10-15 billion years ago.

Origin of the Big Bang Theory

• Its hard to say exactly who came up with the idea of the Big Bang Theory but the main two people who are given credit are Edward Hubble and Georges Lemaitre. These two men came up with the theory in different ways; Edward Hubble theorized that the universe is continuously expanding and Georges Lemaitre thought that the universe was created from the explosion of an atom.

How does it all work?

• According to the Big Bang Theory all the matter that makes up the universe today was compressed into a scorching hot point the size of a pixel (about the size of a pen point). This very hot, very small ball of matter began a never ending process of cooling and expanding, which eventually created our universe.

Was there really a “BIG BANG”?

• No, the theory never states that the matter “exploded” from a small ball to create the universe it simply expanded.

What is the force behind the Big Bang Theory?

Think of something that has the power to squeeze every piece of matter in our universe today into a point the size of a pixel. What is the first thing that comes to mind? If you thought of black holes then you just answered my question because they are the one single power that fuels the Big Bang Theory.

Black Holes

• What are they?– Black holes are areas in space where the

gravitational pull is so great that nothing can escape it. Anything that enters their event horizon is sent spiraling deeper into the hole and is compressed into a tiny point. Black holes are so strong that even light is sucked in which makes black holes invisible to the human eye.

If black holes are invisible how do we know they exist?

• Although black holes themselves are invisible we can see the actions they cause. Some of these actions include the release of radiation when matter is consumed and also they cause any star that enters their event horizon to spiral to the center of the hole and then disappear.

Could Black Holes cause a second “bang”?

• Yes, some people who believe in the theory say that the black holes that exist today will not only consume all of the matter in our universe but they will also consume each other until there is only one hole left. This black hole will then again hold an infinitely dense and infinitely hot ball of matter which will trigger the cycle to start again.

• Some of the most controversial issues with the Big Bang Theory include such topics as:– What existed before the big bang?– What caused the big bang?– Is our universe the only one?
