IllustraSound Project 2009-2013

6

IllustraSound Achievements 2009-13

• Strong interdisciplinary research

• UiB, HUS, CMR (MedViz)

• Certified medical illustrator Kari Toverud

• International cooperation partners

• GE Vingmed (industry, access to data)

• 17 peer-reviewed publications

• 2 successful PhD theses

• 1 Patent application

• Eurographics Dirk Bartz Medical Prize 2013

7

Promising Results

• Peer-reviewed article on High-Quality filtering of

ultrasound data

• Patent application filed in 2012 with support of Bergen

Teknologioverføring AS (BTO) and FORNY

8

ISADAF: In-Situ ADAptive Filtering

• 1 year support from VERDIKT, CMR, UiB, HUS and GE

Vingmed

• Commercialization of results from IllustraSound

• Processing of 3D ultrasound volumes in-situ

a) Not processed b) Processed c) Identical to b, computed in 60% time

9

Results from ISADAF

• New patent application “Visibility-Driven 3D Ultrasound

Image Processing”

• For many processing approaches,

not limited to med. ultrasound

• Versatile, therefore better potential

• NVIDIA Best paper award at

Eurographics VCBM ’14

• Invited to submit to Computer

Graphics Forum (L2 journal)

10

Challenges

• Job after PhD must allow to follow up the results

• Synchronize publishing and patenting activity

• Definition of public disclosure

• Clear to lawyers

• Not clear to researchers by default

11

Future Outlook

• Final report to GE Vingmed, possible exclusive license

• Alternative lines of commercialization

• Other lines medical ultrasound than cardiac (GE Kretztechnik)

• Industries with need of better in-situ visualization of 3D data
