What is Communication?

• The process of exchange of ideas, views, facts, feelings, etc.

• Facts:– People in organizations spend over 75% of their time

in an interpersonal situation

– The root of large no. of organizational problems is poor communication

Importance of Communication in

Marketing

• Communication – the “lifeblood” of every organization

• The most useful product or brand will be a failure if no one knows it is available! – Step should be taken to inform the prospects abt the

product, its qualities, availability & price, etc..

• Can be aptly described as “eyes and ears” of the marketing dept. of an org.

A barrier is something that exists between one thing or person and another and keeps them separate.

Also called interference that can enter into the communication process.

Semantic Barriers

•Badly Expressed Messageinadequate vocabularyusage of wrong words

•Faulty translationstranslator has to be proficient with both the languages

•Symbols with Different Meaningsthe term “round” has 110 diff. meanings

•Use Of technical Jargon•Symbols or words with different meanings•Unqualified Assumptions•Body language and gesture decoding

Physical barriersObstacle that prevents movement or the flow of message physically.

Anything that impedes your progress or movement physically.

For example

• Power off while working.

• Unwanted sound while meeting.

• Network down while mailing etc…..

An inattentive receiver

Self- Centred attitude of receiver

Defensiveness

Psychological Barriers

Examples: people not paying attention because they are absorbed in their own thoughts, jumping to conclusions, faking attention, yielding to distractions, overreacting to emotional words and tuning out topics that one considers to be dull.

Inattentiveness: Unconsciously we become inattentive if the communication contains a new idea and our mind refuses to re spond to it.

Faulty transmission: Part of the message is lost in transmission.

Poor retention: Oral messages in particular are lost due to poor human retention.

Unsolicited communication: We are unresponsive if the communication is unsolicited.

CULTURAL BARRIERSThere are some issues that can separate one person from another and can create barrier between them.
