OVERALL VISION
Somewhat abstract approach; very simple sets to make for easy set changes & allowing the audience to fill in using their own imaginations
Proscenium stage As all the action takes place
outside, no need for working doors, allowing for simple flats; actors must be able to enter from the sides
2 MAJOR SETS 1. The French Court (Act I; Act II,
Scene 3; Act III, Scene 1) 2. The Forest of Arden (ActII, Scene
1-2, 4-7; Act III, Scene 2-5
THE FRENCH COURT
Slightly bleaker than the forest set (lots of gray), reflecting the tension and conflict that clouds the court
A low platform with steps on either side and 3 chairs on it, providing an elevated place for Duke Frederick, Rosalind, & Celia to watch the wrestling and a place for Frederick to sit when he talks to Oliver & his lords
Rectangular flats hanging behind, flown in from sides, painted to look like stone with banners hanging on it to represent the external walls of Frederick’s castle; banners feature snakes to represent Frederick’s deceitfulness
FRENCH COURT LAYOUT
Proscenium
FRENCH COURT, CONTINUED
Hanging flats representing external castle wall
Chairs for Rosalind, Celia, and Frederick
FOREST OF ARDEN
Lots of bright, saturated colors, conveying the mood of gaiety present in the forest, in contrast to the sober atmosphere of the court
Trees made out of hard flats, w/small, clear plastic hooks attached at actors’ eye level for hanging Orlando’s poems (pieces of parchment with a hole at the top for hanging)
One slightly larger tree in center stage (where the wedding & many character conversations will occur); low platform with ramps, painted to look mossy/grassy in front of central tree for Hymen to stand on as he officiates the wedding
FOREST OF ARDEN, CONTINUED
Colorful, blossoming trees to set a lighthearted, joyful mood (hard flats)
Ramped platform (lower than pictured), painted and covered to look mossy; raised area for characters to talk and Hymen to officiate from
