movement• bilaterally symmetrical • Exoskeleton • Crustaceans have two pairs of antennae and Crustaceans have two pairs of antennae and
two pair of maxillaetwo pair of maxillae
Reproduction
• Sexual reproduction
• Sexes are separate fertilization is external in aquatic forms, internal among the terrestrial forms
• Some pathogenic
Digestive system
• digestive glands increase the surface area for digestion
• Divided into 3 main regions: foregut, midgut, and hindgut
• Hindgut is involved with water absorption
Circulatory system
• Open circulatory system
• Heart pumps blood over the brain
• Holes in the side of the heart let blood in to go around again
Respiratory
• Respiratory structures allow the arthropods to metabolize more easily and move quickly
• High metabolism rates need fast oxygen delivery, and arthropods can achieve this with respiratory organs that have a large surface area for collecting oxygen quickly
Habitat
• Live mainly in fresh water and salt water
Interactions with humans
• Used as Halloween costume
• Used for food (lobster, shrimp, and crab)
• People make a living out of catching them and selling to markets and restaurants
Unique features
