Testing of Textiles (Lab)Experiment No. 04Experiment Name: Study on analysis of various textile fibers.Introduction: A fiber that can be spun into yarn or processed into textile such as woven fabric, knit fabric, lace, felt, non-woven etc. by means of an appropriate interlacing method is called as textile fiber.Properties of textile fibers:
Fiber should have at least 5mm length. Elasticity, Fineness, Uniformity, Durability, Luster and crimp should have a
textile fiber more or less. Fiber must be supple, flexible and should have strength enough and so on.
Classification Of Textile Fibers:
Objectives: To analysis Banana fiber To analysis White Jute fiber To analysis Flax fiber To analysis Cotton To analysis Acrylic fiber
Analyzing of textile Fiber:
1. Fiber Name: Banana fiberCharacteristics of Banana Fiber:
i. The chemical composition of banana fiber is cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin.ii. It is highly strong fiber.
iii. It is light weight.
iv. It has strong moisture absorption quality. It absorbs as well as releases moisture very fast.
v. It can be spun through almost all the methods of spinning including ring spinning, open-end spinning, bast fiber spinning, and semi-worsted spinning among others.
vi. It is bio- degradable and has no negative effect on environment and thus can be categorized as eco-friendly fiber.
Uses/Application:i. Primarily used for making items like ropes, mats, and some other composite
materials.ii. In Japan, it is being used for making traditional dresses like kimono, and
kamishimo since the Edo period (1600-1868).iii. Banana fiber is also used to make fine cushion covers, bags, table cloths, curtains
etc.iv. Rugs made from banana silk yarn fibers are also very popular world over.
2. Fiber Name : White Jute FiberCharacteristics of white jute fiber:
i. Fibers length: 5-12 ft.ii. Strength: 3-4gm/den.
iii. Moisture Regain(MR%): 13.75 %iv. Elongation:1.7% at the breakv. Dying Ability: basic dye used to color.
vi. Effect of Mildew: Prevention ability is better than cotton and linen.
Uses/Application:i. Making twine, rope, and making matting are among its uses.
3. Fiber Name: Flax fiberCharacteristics of Flax fiber:
I. It’s also called linen.II. High is 80-120 cm.
III. 70% composed of cellulose.IV. Very Resistance quality.V. Softer to feel.
Uses or Application:
i. Table wear ii. Suiting
iii. Clothing apparel iv. Surgical thread v. Sewing thread
vi. Decorative fabrics vii. Bed linen
viii. Kitchen towels ix. High quality papers x. Handkerchief linen
xi. Shirting xii. Upholstery
xiii. Draperies xiv. Wall coverings xv. Artist’s canvases
xvi. Luggage fabrics xvii. Paneling
xviii. Insulation xix. Filtration xx. Fabrics for light aviation use
xxi. Automotive end uses xxii. Reinforce plastics and composite materials.
xxiii. Flax could conceivably be mixed with excess grass seed straw or softwood fiber in composite boards.
4. Fiber Name : Cotton Characteristics of Cotton:
I. Cotton Fiber could be white, creamy, grey, bluish white or willowish white.
II. It has a tenacity of 3-5gm/den.III. Wet strength of cotton is 20%.IV. It has an elongation break at 5%-10%.V. Standard moisture regain is 8.5.
VI. Cotton is not attacked by moth-grubs or beetles and so on.
Uses/Application:
I. Terry towelsII. Bath Towels
III. ShirtsIV. T-shirtsV. Polo-shirts
VI. DenimVII. Trouser
VIII. SocksIX. UnderwearX. Sewing thread
XI. Bed sheetXII. Pant
XIII. UpholsteryXIV. Clothing apparel and so on.
5. Fiber Name: Acrylic FiberCharacteristics of Acrylic Fiber:
I. It’s generally used for make sweater because it is like wool.II. Tenacity 2-4.2gm/den.
III. Elongation at break 20%-50%.IV. MR%: 1%-2.5%V. Color : white or grey
VI. Strong alkali damages the fiber.VII. Acid dyes and Basic dyes are suitable to dye acrilic fiber.
Uses/Application:
I. Apparel: Sweaters, socks, fleece wear, circular knit apparel, sportswear and children’s wear.
II. Home Furnishings: Blankets, area rugs, upholstery, pile; luggage, awnings, outdoor furniture.
III. Other Uses: Craft yarns, sail cover cloth, wipe cloths.IV. Industrial Uses: Asbestos replacement; concrete and stucco
reinforcement.
