HYDROGEN AS AN ALTERNATIVE

FUEL SOURCE

PRESENTERS Colby Allen

Shaun Cowgell Steven Williams

BASIC WORKINGS OF A FUEL CELL The purpose of a fuel cell is to produce

an electrical current that can be directed outside the cell to do work, such as powering an electric motor or illuminating a light bulb or a city

GOOD POINTS Renewable energy source Clean and pollution free Reduces dependency on foreign oil Cleaner than nuclear waste More efficient than natural gas Safer than natural gas, diesel, and

gasoline

CARBON FOOTPRINTCARBON DIOXIDE IS THE SECOND LARGEST

CONTRIBUTOR TO GLOBAL WARMING

NEGATIVE POINTS (Current used technology takes) More

energy to make hydrogen than you get from it

Hydrogen powered cars will not be able to store has much fuel has a normal car

Needs heat close to 0c Will not perform as well in colder

environments

HYDROGEN FUEL STATIONS

HISTORY OF THE FUEL CELL Discovered by Christian Friedrich Schönbein

in 1838 Demostrated for the first time by Welsh

scientist Sir William Robert Grove in 1839 British engineer Francis Thomas Bacon

developed the first successful 5Kw stationary fuel cell

United Technologies Corporation's UTC Power subsidiary was the first company to manufacture and commercialize a large, stationary fuel cell system for use as a co-generation power plant in hospitals, universities and large office buildings.

Christian Friedrich Schönbein (18 October 1799 - 29 August 1868)

HYDROGEN VS COAL Coal made up 83% of the CO2 Emissions

from power generation Of all the CO2 emissions for the United

States power generation emissions was 38.9% of the total the United States produced in 2006

Using the hydrogen fuel cell for power generation will greatly reduce the amount of C02 produced in the United States, which is the second largest producer of CO2

Feasibility of 1GW hydrogen-from-coal

plant to be studied.

????????????IDEAS??????????????? What will the future bring with the use of Hydrogen?

THE FUTURE OF HYDROGEN IN RENEWABLE ENERGY

Virtual Power Plants using direct solar & hydrogen fuel cells.

The use of the this technology held back by lack of wide use in Nano technologies.

This does not exist today, but when technology catches up with the idea, we will see hydrogen being used in fuel cells for heating, cooling and electrical.

Uses: Homes, small businesses, public facilities
