Overview All That Philly Jazz is a digital history project that is telling the story of Philadelphia’s jazz heritage from bebop to hip-hop. From Dizzy Gillespie at the Downbeat to The Roots mural on South Street, we are mapping jazz venues and landmarks, Walk of Fame plaques, murals and places of cultural significance. Much of Philadelphia’s jazz legacy has been erased. Few structures remain. Jazz spots and landmarks fell victim to race riots, urban renewal and gentrification. As a result, the history largely resides in the memories of those who were there. So All That Philly Jazz is crowdsourced. Community members are invited to share their stories of the jazz scene back in the day. Stories can be shared online or on their mobile device. We will partner with community-based organizations to hold events where residents can share their stories and photos. We will breathe life into jazz spots from the Aqua Lounge to Zanzibar Blue. The objective is to preserve Philly’s jazz heritage and bring new audiences to the music.

All That Philly Jazz is also about community beautification. Philadelphia has more than 40,000 vacant lots. Many jazz spots and landmarks are now litter-filled vacant lots. Through mobile technology and site-specific public art, we will transform vacant places into vibrant open spaces. In doing so, the community will look at the vacant lot differently. They will be able to reimagine the land as what it used to be – a community asset. The open spaces will be contextualized with dynamic content that will be accessible with the tap of a smartphone or smartcard. Philadelphia spends $20 million every year “unlittering” us. Studies show that people are less likely to litter a place to which they feel connected and a sense of belonging. All That Philly Jazz is an innovative solution to address the city’s dirty streets and illegal dumping. A Code for Philly project, All That Philly Jazz is where technology meets public art and civic engagement. The project stems from Music Hack Day, a music-related hackathon held at Drexel University. In Philadelphia, every block tells a story about the city’s musical heritage. All That Philly Jazz, powered by EveryBlock, will be launched in January 2015.
