  • 1. Economical activity at marinecoastal benthic habitats M.Alberts, A.Ikauniece, P.Bruns, J.Kalnins, J.Martinsons IMCS, Riga, 23 May, 2011

2. Situation overviewLatvian marine coastal habitats are currently representedby various sets of data owned by Latvian Institute of AquaticEcology (LIAE). As the coastal region encompasses also protected areas(Natura 2000) with limited allowed actions the knowledge onlocation of habitats and their value is essential for all types ofeconomical activities. The cross-border nature of any marine data on habitatsituation therefore is relevant also for the other countriessharing the Baltic Sea area. 3. Data miningLatvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology datasets: biotopes, water bodies, monitoring data - stations and video monitoring data, bottom type,physico-chemical features temperature and salinity regimes, content ofoxygen and nutrients, density of benthic animals, marine sediment composition,Potential additional thematic datasets (depends from other projectsuccess and results): GORWIND areas suitable for the development of the windenergy production, MARMONI addtional knowledge on benthic habitats in theprotected areas. 4. Additional datasetsEuropoean Environment Agency (EEA)produced data: Natura2000 database Ramsar sites Biogeographical regions 5. What is HABITATS project?HABITATS project (Social Validation of INSPIRE Annex III Data Structures in EU Habitats) focuses on the adoption of INSPIRE standards through a participatory process to design and validate Data, Metadata and Services Specifications with real citizens and business. 6. HABITATS objectives Build HABITATS User Communities ofstakeholders involved in the demand andsupply of spatial information, usagescenarios, requirements and services Consolidate best practice from previousexperiences Define and implement data and metadatamodels for INSPIRE Annex III themes 16,17, 18 and 19 Design and open and efficient HABITATS 7. What are the needs of the LatvianInstitute of Aquatic Ecology Harmonize existing data, Get infrastructure for harmonized datamanagement and use, Possibility to publish data. 8. Main overlaps Consolidate best practice from previousexperiences Any previous experience and examplesare useful Define and implement data andmetadata models for INSPIRE Annex IIIthemes 16, 17, 18 and 19 Define common data models for internaluse in organization, perfect if we can 9. To be compliantHarmonize data to be INSPIRE/HABITATSdata model compliantWe have:Currently harmonized one type data to onedata model in organizationTo do:Implement INSPIRE/HABITATS data modeland migrate data to this model, if thismodels is not usable for daily work providecompliant view on data. The main problem 10. HABITATS Use caseThe provision of information about possible economicalactivities in marine areas is one of the pilot cases inproject INSPIRED HABITATS. INSPIREDHABITATS infrastructure and platformimplementation is planned as INSPIRE requirementcompliant. To provide such information it is planned to reuse projectGORWIND results - the defined matrix of factors andpossible activities in selected area. 11. HABITATS Use caseTo make use case scenario INSPIRE compliant WPS service will be used. 12. HABITATS use caseFor implementation of the envisaged WPSwe depend on: GORWIND results, INSPIRE/HABITATS data modellingresults, GORWIND and INSPIRE/HABITATSresults matching to be possible for the usein one system. 13. Expected architecture 14. Desktop applicationAs default proposed desktop application is used Quantum GIS, because: supports all mainly used web services, is good PostgreSQL support, GUI is translated in Latvian language, flexible GUI and input form customization (important if linked tables with code lists that may change are used) is for freeSince well known components are used in 15. WEB clientDefault web client is OpenLayers with small customization.Depending from needs and development stage web client can be replaced with other well known and well developed clients like: HS Layers MapFish 16. MetadataMicka metadata system will be used as meta-data system deployed under TechnologyDevelopment Forum (TDF)[]Reason to use existing service: LIAE dataset and service amount currentlyis small and own metadata systemdeployment is financialy inapropriate Organization is not so big to maintain theirown system 17. IllustrationsSome illustrations of existing data use. 18. Desktop demo (secured OGC services) 19. WMS service data with databasedata 20. Desktop usung data direcly fromdatabase 21. WEB 22. WEB poloygon query 23. Repeated polygon query onother object type
