2. Situation overviewLatvian marine coastal habitats are currently representedby various sets of data owned by Latvian Institute of AquaticEcology (LIAE). As the coastal region encompasses also protected areas(Natura 2000) with limited allowed actions the knowledge onlocation of habitats and their value is essential for all types ofeconomical activities.The cross-border nature of any marine data on habitatsituation therefore is relevant also for the other countriessharing the Baltic Sea area. 3. Data miningLatvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology datasets: biotopes, water bodies,monitoring data - stations and video monitoring data, bottom type,physico-chemical features temperature and salinity regimes, content ofoxygen and nutrients, density of benthic animals, marine sediment composition,Potential additional thematic datasets (depends from other projectsuccess and results): GORWIND areas suitable for the development of the windenergy production, MARMONI addtional knowledge on benthic habitats in theprotected areas. 4. What is HABITATS project?HABITATS project (Social Validation of INSPIRE Annex III Data Structures in EU Habitats) focuses on the adoption of INSPIRE standards through a participatory process to design and validate Data, Metadata and Services Specifications with real citizens and business. 6. HABITATS objectives Build HABITATS User Communities ofstakeholders involved in the demand andsupply of spatial information, usagescenarios, requirements and services Consolidate best practice from previousexperiences Define and implement data and metadatamodels for INSPIRE Annex III themes 16,17, 18 and 19 Design and open and efficient HABITATS 7. Desktop applicationAs default proposed desktop application is used Quantum GIS, because: supports all mainly used web services, is good PostgreSQL support, GUI is translated in Latvian language, flexible GUI and input form customization (important if linked tables with code lists that may change are used) is for freeSince well known components are used in 15.
