Keep in mind that carriers may impose requirements that are stricter than the the 49CFR Hazardous Materials Regulations.

For example, UPS does not ship HazMat Internationally.

6. Shippers Acting As Carriers

If you ship or deliver an Air bag module in your own vehicle, such as your own pick-up truck or delivery van, then you MUST comply 100% with these regulations.

Failing to comply with these regulations can cost up to $27,500/day/incident.

A shipping paper is one method of communicating that what we are shipping is a hazardous material. There are many different kinds of shipping papers that we can use.

Each person who offers for transportation a hazardous material must prepare a hazardous materials shipping paper.

The additional info in italics will help you determine the PSN and can be used along with the proper shipping name.

26. Additional Description Requirements 172.203(a) Exemptions

If a shipment is shipped under an exemption issued by the DOT, the notation DOT-E followed by the exemption number assigned must appear on the shipping paper after the basic description, for example, DOT-E 12189 which requires the additional word (Recycled) to be added to the proper shipping name. NOTE: DOT-E 12189 EXPIRES MAY 15, 2001.

When offered for domestic transportation by highway, rail freight, cargo vessel or cargo aircraft only, a serviceable air bag module or seat-belt pretensioner that has been removed from a motor vehicle and manufactured as required for use in the U.S. may be offered for transportation without marking the EX number or product code on the shipping paper. Instead, the word Recycled must be entered on the shipping paper immediately after the basic description.

The use of (PARENTHESES) for the word (Recycled) is OPTIONAL!

No more than one device can be put in the packaging.

This change will facilitate transportation of these devices for recycling and eliminate the need for exemption DOT-E 12189 granted to the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) and several other grantees.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires safety information (emergency response information) at all transportation locations including vehicles transporting hazmat.

You must follow the packaging closure instructions exactly (49CFR173.166). Be sure to contact the package manufacturer for authorization of any substitutions to be made with any component of the packaging.

Labels must be printed on or affixed to a surface (other than the bottom) of the package.

Labels must be located on the same surface of the package & near the proper shipping name marking.

Each label must be printed on or affixed to a background of contrasting color, or must have a dotted or solid line outer border.

A label must be clearly visible and may not be obscured by markings or attachments, such as packing tape.

62. Overpacks 173.25(a)(1)

Overpacks are used to provide protection or convenience in handling of a package or to consolidate two or more packages.

To be able to use an overpack for authorized packages containing hazardous materials, the following five conditions must be met:

The package meets the general packaging requirements (cushioning & absorbent used, properly closed, wont leak, etc.) .

63. Overpacks 173.25(a)(1)

UPS NOTE:

For UPS, w hen non-specification packaging is authorized, the outer container for packages weighing no more than 20 Lb must meet or exceed a minimum 200 Lb burst strength or 32 ECT rating. Packages weighing 21 to 70 Lb must have an outer container of at least 275 Lb burst strength or 44 ECT.

Any non-specification package that displays the ISTA seal indicating the package has been tested and certified to ISTA Procedure 1A is not subject to the minimum ECT or burst strength requirements.

64. Overpacks 173.25(a)(2)

For each hazardous material contained in the overpack, the overpack must be:
