Collisions in Two DimensionsSection 7.7
Conservation of Momentum
• How do we apply conservation of momentum to two dimensions?
Two-Dimensions
• Conservation of energy and momentum can be analyzed in two or three dimensions
• Math can quickly become complex• We will start with one object in motion and the second at
rest
Example
• Billiard ball A moving with speed vA = 3.0 m/s in the +x direction strikes an equal mass ball B initially at rest
• After the collision, ball A moves 45° above the x axis
• Ball B moves 45° below the x axis
• What are their final speeds?
Homework
• Read Section 7.7• Do Problems # 40, 41, Page 189
