Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Other ways our documentary uses convention of existing documentaries. Is the use of sound bedding, which is used during the during the voice over, interview and as a soundtrack for the beginning of the episode. Sound bedding/track is an instrumental sound usually from the song that the cast produced or from a featured song that relates to the genre. We used sound bedding because it helps the audience capture what is going on.

Actuality footage was used during the interview of Kayz. Showing the artist performing on stage. This adds realism to our documentary. We also used another actuality footage where the group were performing for a music video in the borough of Abbey wood.

Text was used during the interview. Which includes the artists name and what they do. This is a important form, because it gives the audience further information of who they're watching telling them what their role in Rough Royalty and also makes the characters more easier to remember.

Interviews are a very common convention. This allows our cast to speak directly to the audience, telling them about themselves and experiences. Interviews help to give our documentary a sense of realism. The interviewee also look into the eye of the interview while giving there thoughts on the subject. This helped to create more emotion as they speak. In our interview it was set up in a room using a white screen background and bright lightning and the camera remains static to make it look more professional and so it doesnt distract the audience from what`s being said, makes it easier to see the cast and offers a clean space to place in the text.

We also used cutaways during the interview to illustrate what the casts are talking about e.g. Dans (public relations) interview.

We used Narrative montage for the introduction by showing different cuts of what's going to take place in the documentary. There were numerous shots of the group in different settings and time within the documentary. Montages in documentaries usually link to what the narrator or different people in the documentary says. However we used this technique but also challenged it by using montage to show iconography images and things thats going on in the series.

Another convention that was used is colour bars and beep sound to add emphasis during the interview of Kaysan. The Colour bars were added during post production, where we censored some of the language used and redid the interview. Colour bars are usually used for behind the scenes and for some music documentaries.

During the end of the series before the advertisement. We used cliff-hanger footages to add anticipation towards the audience making them want to see more. This is usually done in tv shows and documentaries to gain the audiences attention. We included footages of the group meeting a famous rapper Tinie Tempah and them performing for a music video.

Video of cliff-hanger in documentary...

Mise-en-scene has been consistent throughout the documentary, which were potrayed in the narration, introduction, interview, archive footage. The mise-en-scene includes:Costume- The cast were all black/white to represent the Hip-Hop and grime culture adding realism to the documentary.Lightning- Most documentary use natural lighting. We portrayed natural lighting in some areas. In the interview we used 2-point soft box lighting equipment which uses white light to make it appear natural. Makeup/hair- documentaries are very natural so we didnt use any makeup and hair. It was much preferred for the cast to be themselves. Setting/location- the location different areas of south east London. Most documentary usually have a done in the natural environment. We chose south east London because it relates to the theme of our documentary of Grime/Hip-HopCamera- was mostly handheld and static for the interview. We also used two camera to show different POV during the interview.

Q2: How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts? For my main product of A2 Media studies. My group and I created a short documentary within the genre of stereotype and representation of young black teenage boys. My documentary had to meet a criteria point:

5 mins longHow black boys are represented in a negative wayMust present themes and issues

Ancillary task include: My magazine TV listing

My Documentary Channel 4 poster

I did some research on TV listing magazines and looked into the house style and layout I started looking into different forms of double page spread TV listing magazines to help me know how to structure the magazine. For the film poster, I looked at different posters from different channels. I also looked at posters for Channel 4, which were based on mainly on TV shows. But there were effective to use because they all consisted of the similar house styles.Channel 4 logo on the middle cornerA main imageThe names of the documentary and date its being shown.

These are some of the TV listing magazine and TV posters I've been looking atOne thing that these double page spread have in common is use very large images of the main characters covering most of the pages. Which helps to attract the audience. For the posters I looked mainly into Channel 4 posters. They had very different ways of potraying the main image. Although they used the same Channel 4 logo on the right side. And the name of the channel with date and time

After researching on existing TV review magazines, I looked into the design on Vampire Diaries and what's its trying to portray. I noticed that the purpose is to advertise their show. Through using heading, images (main and secondary), cast names, designs and colour etc. Using these elements make the poster more attractive, sellable and similar to other products.

Looking at these elements for magazine has helped me to structure my work in similar ways. Existing magazine and ancillary

Existing poster and ancillary

The production of poster and TV listing double page spread (DPS)To produce the poster and Tv listing magazine I used adobe software. Which include photoshop, illustrator, and indesign. The Designs where inspired by research into different existing products. It was very important for us to design a product that looks similar and carried a house colour and style throughout.

I edited the photograph for the tv listing magazine using magic wand to be able to use the background of Woolwich to represent where the documentary is talking place. Photoshop was used for editing the photographs and Indesign was used to include text and organise the layout.

When comparing my documentary to the poster and TV listing pages. I think that the most effective and strongest is the documentary because the film uses good iconography and language to explore the themes and issues of representation/stereotypes in more detail. Making the audience connect to the casts and have a better understanding. However I feel that the magazine and poster adds more the film as these two elements are vital parts of the production as a whole. As both emphasis the genre of Hip-Hop giving the reader the reason to watch the documentary.

The use of synergy (which is the combination of two or more products which are linked together and are used to boost and promote each other). The style guide which usually consist of black and white because its the colour represented in Grime culture. Its used in all of the products including the documentary.

In the TV magazine DPS uses mainly white for the text in the columns. The white can be easier seen over the dark background compared to using black. I used black colour Big to emphasis how important inspiration is. This also helps the headline stand out more.

The poster is in black and white, to create mysterious feel. The picture is in black and white to make the logo and text stand out more. It also fits the theme on grime culture.

For the documentary series, we used some aspects of black and white text and elements. For the Rough Royalty glitch transition, the names of cast and the costume and white background, it showed elements of style guide colours.

I believe that the main task links well with the ancillary products and the ancillary products linked with each other.Although each ancillary are used to target the audience in different ways. The poster is used to attract the audiences attention and the TV listing magazine is used to give the audience a bit of information on what`s the documentary is about.
