Introduction

Narration- Hi!. I am SPYBOT. I am here to tell you all about Lego Technic. Lego Technic is a branch of Lego that deals with mechanics. It is a very powerful system and you can create very sophesticated machines. A lot of it is snap on and slide on. It also gives special readymade parts like differential casings, or turntables, or planetery gear systems. You can also use motors with it to create motorized machines. Here are a few examples of the snap on and slide on I was talking about.

Main parts

BeamCross AxleGearRight angled beamConnector Peg

Narration- The main types of parts in Lego Technic are the beams, the axles or the cross axles, the gears and the special types of beams that allow us to connect parts in right angles. To connect parts, we use connecter pegs or axles with stoppers3

The basics

Narration- Here is a video showing how to do basic things in Lego Technic such as connecting a peg to a beam, inserting an axle on a gear, and using different types of pegs. To show you this, I have used a special type of software called Lego digital designer, which lets you simulate building with Lego on your computer4

Basic model systems

Here, you create a working gear train. The yellow parts seen at the end are stoppers. The stop the axle from coming off the beam. You can turn one of the gears, and you will see that the other gear will turn too. This system provides 1:5 reduction if you turn the small gear first, or 5:1 reduction if you turn the big gear first.

This model is a working car.. This car cannot steer. It is more complicated than the last model, but works just as well. You can use different colored beams or different wheels

Narration- Now that you know how to do the basic connections, here are a few model systems that you can easily make. These will help you to get used to working with Lego Technic. Follow the instructions shown perfectly.5

All about gears

Spur gears. These gars can be connected in a straight line. However, if used with crown gears, they can be connected with right angles. Available in 8, 24, and 40 tooth versions

Bevel gears. These gears can be connected in right angles with other bevel , or double bevel gears. Available in 20, and 12 tooth versionsCrown gears. These gears can be connected in right angles with spur gears. Available in only a 24 tooth Worm gears. These gears can be used with spur gears or double bevel gears for a very high gear reduction. Double bevel gears. These gears can be used in right angles or in a straight line. Available in 12, 20 and 36 tooth versions.

Narration- Gears are an important part of Lego Technic. The allow the transfer and manipulation of torque and speed. The different types of gears in Lego Technic are spur gears, bevel gears, double bevel gears, crown gears and worm gears. 6

Hinge Systems

For relatively light applications, the readymade hinge parts can be used.

For heavy duty applications, we use a custom hinge made of beams. In the picture, I have also added a gear for controlling the movement of the joint.

This is a universal joint which is usually used coupled with a hinge, which allows rotation to be transferred over a hinge.

Narration- A lot of times, to maintain strength while allowing freedom of motion, special hinge systems are used. If strong enough, they can sometimes sustain the wait of an entire Lego model without bending or breaking. Sometimes, gears can be used with hinges to create controllable hinge systems

Turntables

This is the Lego large turntable. It has 56 teeth on the outside and 24 teeth on the inside. A planetary gear system can be built by using an 8 tooth gear as the sun gear and by using two 8 tooth gears as the planetary gears

This is the small turntable which has 28 teeth. As it is small, it can fit in small spaces and so is very versatile. But it is not very good for supporting large weights.

Narration- A lot of times, for revolving mechanisms, turntables are used. Most Lego turntables have gear teeth fo controlling the turntable. Some turntables also have gear teeth for planetary gear systems.8

DIFFERENTIALS AND STEERINGS

Here, the first picture is a standard non locking differential using three 12t bevel gears and the differential casing. The second version is the more complicated torsen differential, which is a self locking differential.

Here, the first picture is a rack and pinion steering while the other one is a very simple steering that I have developed myself.

Narration- Lego Technic provides readymade differential parts but you can also create custom torsen differentials. For steering systems, you can either use standard rack and pinion steering systems or create custom steering systems. 9

Motorization.

This is the micromotor. It is the smallest motor and spins at a very low speed

This is the minimotor and is slightly bigger than the micromotor but much more powerful

This is the geared motor and has an internal gear reduction

This is the dune buggy motor and has a very high RPM

This is the power functions small motor and is extremely versatile and can produce good amounts of torque and speed.

This is the power functions large motor and can be mounted very easily

This is the Power Functions XL motor and can deliver very high amounts of torque

This is the Mindstorms large motor. It is comparable to the XL motor but has an additional feature of being a servo motor

This is the Mindstorms medium motor and is also a servo motor. It is comparable to the Power functions medium motor

Now that we have looked at the various types of Technic pieces, let us have a look at motorization. The different types of motors we can use are the Lego power functions motors, and the Lego Mindstorms motors10

Thank you for watching

Narration-Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoyed my presentation. If you found it useful, please Like it and share it with your friends. My battery has started running low, so I need to go charge myself. Goodbye11
