7.3 Nuclear Reactions!Ft The Hulk invasions!

Fission means it gets fizzy right?● Fission sadly has nothing to do with anything fizzy… Nuclear

fission is the splitting of a GIANT nucleus into two smaller nucleus.○ Although this may not make our favorite can of soft

drinks it can provide large amounts of energy which can be used to operate the machines that do make the soft drinks!■ This energy can help reduce the burning of fossilised

fuels, but this produces waste that needs to be stored for thousands of years!

○ But, it can also make weapons! To fight evil!

Page 3: 7.3

Weapons?!● Chain reactions are very dangerous if used in a form of a

weapon.○ Chain reactions CAN be controlled

■ They can be controlled if the material can absorb neutrons, this is what helps control it.

○ Lovely but what about the weapons?■ The number of fissions and the amount of energy

that is released can grow very quickly and may also lead to a HUGE nuclear explosion.

○ This also means that nuclear power plants such as the CANDU reactors run huge risks while they operate.

CANDU reactors…?And I thought we lived in a peaceful place… but turns out that Canada is the alpha dog in use of nuclear technology (In a peaceful way of course! Eh?) ● CANDU (standing for Canadian deuterium uranium)

(deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen-1) is among the safest nuclear reactors in the world. This is because it can be shut down quickly if there is ever any problem.

● These reactors work similar to fossil-fuel burning plants because they produce a large amount of heat which can be used to boil water, create steam and power a turbine to produce electricity!

Not so pop quiz!

● CANDU stands for○ Canada deteriorate uranium○ Can decompose uranium○ Canada deuterium uranium ○ Canada deuterium ununtrium

● Chain reactions can create:○ Big explosions○ nuclear weapons○ Electricity○ All of the above

If there is light... Fission is the breaking of an atom whichmeans if the breaking of an atom has aname, the joining of two nucleuses must have one too!● These are all nuclear reactions

○ This is when there is a changein the atoms nucleus.

● NOTE! Nuclear reactions and chemical reactions are NOT the samething!!

Page 7: 7.3

...There is darkness Fusion is the joining of an atom’s nucleus

● Fusion is when two low mass nuclei join○ This happens in the core of the sun

as well as other stars.● Why is this possible?

○ The possibility of fusion in stars cores are possible

because■ It is hot enough

■ There is enough pressure

Of course… equations...Now you must learn how to write nuclear equations, now instead of me mentally yaking at you here is a video instead!
