Every day, we use a variety of applicationswithout even wondering about their origins.
Our main goal is to complete the task athand, as long as these needs are satisfied weremain loyal to the particular software.
But users like me and You need change overa period of time. So developers of thesoftwares work hard for that.
This is due to highly competitive softwaremarket.
What if you need not pay money to buy asoftware or use a pirated one?
Open Source softwares will do that foryou.

What is FOSS?
Free and Open Source Software.
Free/Libre/Open-source software (FLOSS) is software that isboth free software and open source.
It is liberally licensed to grant users theright to use, copy, study, change, andimprove its design through the availabilityof its source code.
Free refers to the freedom to copy and re-use the software,rather than to the price of the software.
”Think of free as in free speech, not as in free food”.

Open Source Softwares can be even better than theircommercial varients in some cases.
This all starts with any individual designing a first version of asoftware and he puts it for testing, debuging and reviews byothers.
Over a period of time the application keeps improving.

A bit of History..
In the 1950s-60s-70s, it was normal to provide free software.
1960s change was inevitable: the reason, a growing softwareindustry.
Software Players did not want the costs of ”free” softwarebundled with hardware product costs. Hence, Software wasalso sold.
In 1983, Richard Stallman,announced the GNU project later theFree Software Foundation (FSF) wasfounded in October 1985. Thisformed the base for the freedoms ofthe software users.

Lets have a look at the 4 freedoms a Free Software user has:
1 freedom 0:The freedom to run theprogram, for any purpose onelikes.
2 freedom 1:The freedom to study how theprogram works, and adapt itto your needs.
3 freedom 2:The freedom to redistributecopies so you can help yourneighbour.
4 freedom 3:The freedom to improve theprogram, and release yourimprovements for the public.

If you don’t want to buy a software and still want theintended task done, then you can shift towards the OPENSOURCE SOFTWARE.
So now the question is:Which open source software to use ?
Lets have a look at some of the softwares that a person newtowards open source can easily use.

1. The OS
Ubuntu:
It is most widely used open source operatingsystem and provides community andprofessional support.
It is available for mobile platform as well asfor desktops.
You can Upgrade to a new version availableat the end of each six months.
Ubuntu is very easy to integrate, andprovides you tools to create documents,spread sheets and presentations and sharethem with Windows users stress-free.

2. The Browser
Mozilla Firefox:
Firefox currently accounts for 24.43% of therecorded usage share of web browsers.
Already the browser of choice for most webprofessionals.
The Private Browsing feature is awesomeand very useful.
A very useful browser for personal use too.

3. The Office tool
Open Office:
It is used for word processing, spreadsheets,presentations, graphics, databases and more.
It is cross platform software and available inmany languages.
Stores data in open standard format, It canalso read and write software packages suchas Microsoft Office suite.
It can be downloaded and usedcompletely free of charge for any purpose.

4. The Video Player
VLC:
I have switched from one media player toanother in serach of certain features, Istopped when I found VLC.
Plays almost all file formats, even the brokenfiles. It repaires them and plays.
Has a clean interface, You can add subtitlesand change the aspect ratio to fit the screen.
At last count, VLC media player had beendownloaded 300 million times.
Recomended for all the users who lovewatching movies, its even great forplaying songs.

5. The File Compressor
7-Zip:
7-Zip is an extremely popular file archiver forWindows.
It being, although free, outperforms Winzip.
It can unpack the vast majority of archiveformats and can create TAR and GZarchives, commonly used on Unix and Linuxsystems.
It has its own 7z format, which easilyoutshrinks ZIP files.

6. The Image Manipulator
Gimp:
GIMP is acronym for GNU imagemanipulation program. Can run on Linux,Windows and Mac OS.
Industry and Personal image editing softwareis expensiv, but GIMP is free.
It has capability of photo retouching,composition and authoring much like AdobePhotoshop and is available for multipleplatforms..
Use it as paint program, expert qualityphoto retouchingor image converter etc.
