Windows Connectivity – Requirements

• One or more VNX storage systems• One or more Windows hosts• Supported HBAs, HBA drivers, switches and cables• A management station in the environment

Supported host and OS Supported browser Supported JRE Network connectivity to storage systems

• Correctly configured switch zoning• Correctly configured network

Windows Connectivity – LUNs

• Check and validate all host to VNX connectivity• Add the LUNs and the Windows host to the Storage Group• Run Windows Disk Management

Rescan may be required

• Write signature on disk (LUN) Initialize the disks

• Run Diskpart to align the data and partition the disk Windows 2008 automatically aligns partitions at 1 MB

• Add drive letter(s)• Create volumes (basic disks)• Copy/verify all information to / on configuration worksheet

Windows Server and FCoE CNA Adapters

• FCoE Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) are similar to Fibre Channel adapters

• The adapter will appear to the Windows server as two different pieces of hardware

• When viewing the Windows Device Manager, you will see both a Intel 10 Gigabit network adapter adapter as well as a QLogic Fibre Channel available in the system

Data Alignment

• Alignment of data to LUN structure• Important when OS writes data to beginning of LUN• Misaligned data

causes disk crossings may not allow stripe alignment of large, uncached writes

Windows Connectivity – Best Practices

• Use storage system-based RAID• RAID type should be based on Application I/O pattern• Use basic disks• Leave cache page size at 8 kB in mixed environments• 8 kB page size for MS 2007 Exchange and 16kB for MS 2010

Exchange• Leave element size at 64 kB for VNX LUNS • Align LUN on a 1024 kB boundary with Diskpart
