being a chase to the bottom

I speak to Head of Innovation at UNHCR, Andrew Harper (min 40) on what the tech community and

the edtech community can do for the 65 million currently displaced and Benjamin Merrit of It’s Alive on the role of chatbot technology (min 52) in educational support services, and we get to know one of

the many new Phygital services where digital and physical overlap in the form of Magikbee and Hugo Filipe Ribeiro.

Brian Subirana:

- Most edtech technology is useless today, simply course cutting technology that lowers value and

costs; education needs to be drastically reinvented or it will become a tourist attraction very much like

the Grand Canyon or La Sagrada Familia.- All edtech is doing today is automating grading maybe, basically lowering costs. It doesn't add value.

- MOOCs are making the textbook more accessible, but it's not really adding value. Computers are catching up, AI is getting really good and we should be investing in humans. And all we are doing is cutting costs, I think it's pretty worrying.

- There is a solution, it's more about managing what you've learned, its more than just stopping school when you graduate, we need to think about how we are going to maintain. Just like you send your car to maintenance, then maybe we'll have to spend a week here, a week there of remembering.

- Mobius should help academics and become a space for start-ups.

Nikos Tzagkarakis of iYouth Lab: ‘We want to build an ecosystem of innovation whilst studying.’ ‘One student has the software and one student has the hardware. They connect their data through iYouthLab to facilitate their vision and research project.’ ‘Security and data sharing was an issue five years ago.’ ‘We needed a link with business. But we don’t want to be LinkedIn. We are not professional orientated; the link are research centres.’ Students need to innovate even more.Gary Vaynerchuk - he’s a pure salesman. He’s a beast! Seth GodinThese are my two biggest influences ‘The other thing we are looking for is funds.’

Tania Roquette of Full Fabric:How we can use gamification in the application process Most universities rely on really legacy technology which makes the experience for the candidates really frustrating

Andrew Harper - 40 minutes in - 65 million people who have been displaced and in need, half of those are children, those are tens of millions of people that are missing out of school , it’s a growing number. Potential of lost generations!

- Connectivity is key, provide modules, accreditation, adult learning. We have to be much more ambitious than just build a school in a refugee camp.

- We need more learning opportunities; can we bring them to the people in need?- I’m in desperate need of good ideas. We can’t be bureaucratic about it, we need to be engaged with legitimate sustainable ideas that can be easily scaled up.

- My dream is to have a global service centre for refugees and to use AI to prioritise intervention.Less and less people are returning to their homes.- We need to have a seismic shift when we look at education. When we look at education. we

can’t look at the formal way of how we do things.- If we look at the number of schools required, we would have to build 12,000 schools every year,

without fail and no one is doing that. Formal is important, but what happens if people have missed out on education in the last 2, 3, 4, 5 years. What if there are adults who have never had the opportunity to go to school.

- We’ve got to start looking at a modular learning experience. Technology is critical, because there is no other way to get learning experiences to the 10s of thousands of people.

- We need to be listening more to refugees.- We can use deep learning and AI to make intervention more effective
