DESCRIPTION
There are few more popular types of batteries used in Solar Flood lights - Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, LiFePO4, Lead-acid. Each of these battery types are suited for certain flood light type. In this presentation I have explained, what each of those batteries are, listed all their advantages and disadvantages and pointed out which battery type is suited for what type of LED solar flood lights. 4 Most used Battery Types in Solar Flood lights and
What you Need To Know about Each of them
www.ledsolarfloodlights.com
The most popular battery types used in LED solar flood lights
• Nickel group batteries–Ni-Cd (Nickel-Cadmium)–Ni-MH (Nickel – Metal Hydride)
• Lithium group batteries– LiFePO4 (Lithium iron phosphate)
• Lead-acid batteries– Valve-regulated Lead-acid battery
Ni-Cd (Nickel-Cadmium) battery
Ni-Cd (Nickel-Cadmium) battery
• Ni-Cd batteries are primarily used for smaller solar flood lights that has lower power and level of brightness
• Ni-Cd batteries are mostly used in packs of more than 3 in different solar flood lights
• The power in voltage produced by both Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries are practically the same
Ni-Cd advantages
• Longer life charge and discharge cycles
• Lower self discharge rate• More tolerance against
overheating unlike Ni-MH
Ni-Cd disadvantages
• Low battery capacity• Memory effect• Toxic cadmium
Ni-MH (Nickel – Metal Hydride) battery
Ni-MH (Nickel – Metal Hydride) battery
• Ni-MH batteries are the most popular battery type for lower brightness LED solar flood lights, and are used in lot more floodlights than Ni-Cd batteries
• Ni-MH batteries have almost three time higher capacity than Ni-Cd batteries
Ni-MH advantages
• Higher capacity• No memory effect• Environment friendly• LSD Ni-MH
Ni-MH disadvantages
• High self discharge rate• Over-discharge
LiFePO4 (Lithium iron phosphate) battery
LiFePO4 (Lithium iron phosphate) battery
• LiFePO4 or Lithium iron phosphate batteries are used on higher-end LED solar flood lights
• Currently used by few manufacturers• Has got many advantages over
competitors
LiFePO4 advantages
• Long cycle life• Long service life• Constant discharge voltage• Safe and stable• Wide temperature range• Fast charging• Light, flexible and small form factor• Environment friendly
LiFePO4 disadvantages
• More expensive than Lead-acid batteries
• Lower energy density• Low discharge rate• Lower temperatures impacts
battery
Lead-acid battery
Lead-acid battery
• Lead-acid batteries are used in large and powerful outdoor solar floodlights
• Lead-acid battery type used in solar flood lights is VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid)
• VRLA batteries can be operated and installed in any direction without danger of liquids spilling out of the battery, and they are maintenance free
Lead-acid advantages
• Cheaper and easy to make• Low self-discharge• High power• Performs well in low and high
temperatures
Lead-acid disadvantages
• Heavy and less durable• Low specific energy• Slower charging• Sulfation• Unfriendly for environment
