a couple of ladies had a dream to shareThe dream involved creating an organization where girls of
all ages and all walks of life, could come together and share
a common passion. A place where they could learn without
judgement or insecurity, share their dreams and goals, and find
friends and mentors with a similar passion and a common goal.
in the beginningStarted in 2001 by Sue Corbett and Leonie Maher, and
initially only located in NSW, Girls Torque (Australian
Women’s Motorsport Network), quickly grew to include
members from all over Australia. With their own personal
involvement in motorsport, Sue and Leonie could see there
was a growing interest from girls within their community.
Some girls were interested in racing, while there were
many others who preferred to be more hands on with the
engines. But even within this age of equality, they could
see that only the most out spoken of girls would be
given a chance to learn and participate.
So born was the need to provide a safe learning
environment where young girls could be mentored and
encouraged to follow their dreams.

amazing girls doing great thingsGirls Torque is made up of girls of all ages and from all walks
of life who want to make their mark on the world. Whether it’s
through their own self achievement or by inspiring others to
reach out and grasp their own dreams.
stars in the makingWe might just have the first female to win a formula 1 race,
or to design the worlds fastest environmentally friendly
race car. But more likely we have a lot of girls who aren’t
afraid to look under the bonnet, or change a tyre, and
who don’t feel left out when the conversation turns to
motorsport. Our girls all have the same passion, whether
they are under the bonnet, waving a flag, taking photos
or in the driver seat.
And in our eyes, that alone makes them a star already.
