DESCRIPTION

We're Going on a Bear Hunt Concept Taught: -Students will learn how to comprehend a book through read alouds, choral reading and an after reading activity. Pre-reading: •Students will predict, based on the cover, what the story is going to be about. •When the students are predicting what is happening in the story, the teacher will ask questions like: What do you think the cover is about? What do you think that the cover tells about the story? •After predicting the students will watch a video of the author of the book telling the book in a fun way. This will allow the students to hear the story before they read the story. Reading: •The teacher will read the story in a read aloud format. This format will allow the students will be able to listen to what is happening in the story. The children will be able to have a mental picture of what is happening in the story. •Before the teacher reads the book, the teacher can tell the students to “turn on their T.V.” so that they are ready to make a mental picture of the story. •After the teacher reads the story to the students once, the students will read the book together. This activity is called a choral reading. The students will read the story while the teacher reads it as well. Everyone will be reading out loud. This will allow the students to comprehend the book easier and the students should be able to read the story as well. Post-reading: •The teacher will ask the students to retell what happened in the story they just read. •After the students retell the story have the students think of adventures that they could go on similar to what happened in the story. •The students will then make their own pattern book that is similar to the book that they just read. The class will work together to make the pattern book. This pattern book will be done on a power point. ESOL Modifications: •Allow ESOL students to sit around students that have very good reading skills so that both students can work together to help each other to understand the book. •While reading the book make sure the pictures are shown and make emphasis on the pictures so that the ESOL students can better comprehend the story because they have the pictures to back up the story.
