Up until the VY Holden Commodore, the shape, style and looks for the III GEN Commodore looked relatively the same. The design team at Holden did well to redesign the VY SS Tail Lights, with it given a smoother, more angular and aerodynamic look when put next to to the first models. A main change to the design was the front lights, with a more harder look. The luxury models were given a different look where as the standard models still had what they called the teardrop in the headlight.

On the more luxurious models Holden introduced projector lamps to the VY SS Tail Lights. At the time the VY SS Tail Lights for Commodore was styled, luxury Euro cars were gaining popularity in Australia, and Holden used a lot of popular features in this version.

A notable tail lamp upgrade was the the inclusion of triangular tail lights, which gave the tail of the VY SS Tail Lights a new look. Dependent on what model VY SS Tail Lights you purchased, the rear end was given a different look. The VZ Commodore was the final release of the third generation Commodores and overall the version looked pretty much the same as the VY SS Tail Lights Commodore but did receive a slightly new front end and the teardrop was removed from all front-ends. However, projector lamps were still a feature of the top end models.

The taillights were also updated with the Calais specifically receiving a much darker tint on the lower half of the taillight.

Holden took quite some time in developing the new Commodore after the VZ. From 1997 until 2006, Holden lovers had to expect until the VE was delivered. Holden devoted a large amount of cash into the VE with reportedly 1 Billion Dollars been spent on the brand new look. The VE Commodore was also absolutely planned in Australia which was also a first for Holden. The VE accentuated a new look that was not seen beforehand in the other designs. A broader stance, complete 50/50 weight distribution and flared guards added to the more belligerent style of this model.

More colossal and more blockier, the headlights on the VE were a little larger then the past designs. Once more newer styles received a black reflector and projector headlamps. The VE Commodore taillights also acquired new treatment with the more extravagant designs getting European design taillight while the sportier models including the SSV heralded the great looking black reflector tail lights with centre lamp and chrome border. The SSV tail lights are becoming a very known easy-install enhancement for the VE with the improved fashion these provided.

In a large progress for Holden, the extravagant design HSV was given an absolutely new back part to give it a entirely new and unique look. Arguably this was a move towards a more Euro type style and was benefited greatly when it was introduced. Many say that this was because it was the name of the European design at that moment and the move going to a more European styling.
