1.- INTRODUCTION

• The first visit within the Grundtvig project ”FLOWERS UNIT EUROPE“

(FUE) took place from September 9 to 16 in Palma de Mallorca (Spain).

• On request of our Grundtvig Project coordinator, Vesuvio, CEA Camp Rodó host our first FUE Grundtvig Project meeting in Mallorca.

• The host organization - CEA Camp Rodó – prepared, with their partner associations, a learning and cultural program about Mallorcan flora with all countries involved on the project, according to the proposal Application form for Learning Partnerships.

1.- INTRODUCTION

• Previous contact Nacional Agencies and the “Internacional Programmes Office” in Palma where we were informed that we could start moving and setting up the Project in September as planned. After having daily contacts via e-mail and phone with our Project Polish coordinator, during July and August, the partner CEA Camp Rodó commitment was kindly invite all countries envolved in the F.U.E. Project to have our first meeting in Mallorca in September .

• Before the meeting we prepared a detailed proposed agenda, according all suggestions and required information to have a useful and fruitful meeting keeping in mind the number of participants from each partner country. The first programme of activities was just a first approach and after 5 drafts, all suggestions for the meeting were welcome.

1.- INTRODUCTION

• All delegations have worked on the Project, during daily meeting sessions in Mallorca and we have followed step by step and the activities that we had planned in the formal application form sent to the Nacional Agencies.

• We agreed on the planned activities, the FUE Project calendar.

• The meeting in Mallorca has given us the opportunity to letting us to know each other, study some aspects of Mediterranean vegetation during our study tours to botanical gardens, prepare a first approach on Majorcan flora and agree for further actions and internacional cooperation.

2.- AIMS OF THE FUE PROJECT

• Create network of European organisations in EU member-countries doing lifelong learning programs for adults.

• Study the flora that is a popular activity for the elderly, particularly for the retired and people on the pension with disability.

• Learn flower’s history and culture in own and other European countries.

• Artistic and environment education, education about sustainable development for European partners during FUE project.


• Organize seminars and workshops in own organisations to learn about flora in gardens, fields and forests.

• Prepare presentations about these studies during visits to the partner’s countries to share knowledge, similarity and diversity in flora. Visits will be during flower festivals and other events related to flora or ethnobotanics.

• Recognize and respect cultural differences, to awaken within our adult learners the idea of active citizenship, national traditions and values of our own country and the wider European Community.

• Know European traditions, particularly in sustainable environment, in the history of flower’s festivals.


• Project will extend participation in educational opportunities through similar and common activities (courses, seminars, workshops, excursions), promotion of healthy style of life among adult learners.

• Project helps to teach openness and appreciate each other’s views, break stereotypes, accept personal differences and adopt the idea that everybody is equal.

• Organise studies on local and European levels about flora in nature (forests, fields, gardens, parks), in art and handicraft.

• Learn together and culture of plants, etnobotanics in own and other European countries.


• Create art and handicraft works in own organisations and one common flower composition.

• Carry out thematic excursions and trips to the nature trails and botanic gardens.

• Take photos and make video about studies, organise presentations and competitions in own and partner organisations to share knowledge and experiences.


• Create partnership between European organisations and involve adult learners into the international partnership project to improve their knowledge and skills.

• Learn about sustainable development, particularly the influence to the nature because of climate changes and polluting.

• Show opportunities of lifelong learning, to make new friends and partners for future cooperation

WELCOME RECEPTION AT THE SCHOOL AND TOUR AROUND THE CAMP RODO FACILITIES

• On september the 10th morning took place the first session of the Mallorcan meeting. After a welcome session and a tour around the Camp Rodo institution facilities, all delegations had the first working meeting that started with the presentation of each participant educational institution.

• In this first working session we discussed the points in our agenda related to: aims of the project, organization, activities to achieve the goals planned, plannig and calendar of the activities and of the

working sessions in each of the countries involved in the project.

INSTITUTIONS PRESENTATIONS STOWARZYSZENIE VESUVIO (POLAND)

• STOWARZYSZENIE VESUVIO is non-profit cultural-educational NGO located in the south-east part of Poland where unemployment is one of the highest in the country. Moreover, many people are forced to apply for the early retirement being at age 50+, 55+ due to external reasons (e.g. reduction of working places, closing small and big factories and simply to leave vacancies for the youngest).

• This socio-economic disadvantage translates into lower-than-average income

house holds which is a financial barrier for informal, non-formal, non-professional education for older people in the concept of Lifelong Learning (LLL).

• Additionally, the lack of cultural and educational centres for disabled adults and seniors plus their early retirement causes stagnancy, regress and both intellectual and physical inactivity.


• VESUVIO creates and supports alternative opportunities for non-formal, informal, non-professional education for older generation (including people without basic qualifications, disabled and seniors) to make them still active and work at any field to improve their quality of life.

• The association presents and opens the possibility for life long learning,

develops awareness of the importance of lifelong learning, involves older people in cultural and educational activities.

• It promotes LLL through general courses, workshops and social-cultural

recreation with foreign and local mobilities and exchanges. European integration and its educational dimension and sustainable development are the basic aims supported by creation a network of contacts with foreign organizations. The project subscribes into strategy of country development.



INSTITUTIONS PRESENTATIONS LOGOSVITA (ESTONIA)

• LOGOSVITA (ESTONIA) is a non-profit organisation based in Tallinn. The main target groups are national minorities and people mainly in age 50+.

• NGO is working with adult learners in non-formal education in art, culture, history, languages and health more than 15 years.

• NGO organises seminars and workshops to train people from different nations, social background and education levels to integrate and be included into the Estonian society and to have healthy style of life.

• NGO is doing training for trainers and cooperate with many different NGOs and specialists in Estonia and abroad.

INSTITUTIONS PRESENTATIONS CENTRO CULTURAL E DESPORTIVO SAO JOSE (MADEIRA,

PORTUGAL)

• CENTRO CULTURAL E DESPORTIVO SAO JOSE (MADEIRA, PORTUGAL) is a non-profit Cultural Association and a private organization for senior citizens, situated in Funchal, Madeira.

• In our association there are different kinds of activities for seniors related with non-formal and informal education, such as English course, ICT course, Sewing course, Fine arts course, Swimming course, Theatre and drama course.

• Our primary objective is promoting the active and healthy aging, because

senior people can be sometimes marginalized and be part of group at risk of social exclusion due to low old-age pension and loneliness.

• At age 65 and more, people leave their jobs and have more time for them selves and to do activities that they always wanted to do but do not had time. Now it’s the moment to be a part of something bigger, something better, something different in their lives, that’s the purpose of our job at this association.

• We would like to take part in this partnership project to have seniors open to the world, to exchange different traditions, cultures, to put our organization in the EU context, to enhance the European dimension of education in our organization by promoting joint co-operation activities with European partners.

INSTITUTIONS PRESENTATIONS FONDATION KRÜGER (FRANCE)

• FONDATION KRÜGER (FRANCE) is located in French rural region where adults’ education is little developed and working adults have a low level of qualification. This region is a mountain area where public transports are difficult to get and people live in very little villages.

• One of the main interests of Foundation Krüger is environment preservation and sustainable development. This area is well developed with the use of renewal energies, the constitution of a net of local providers of biological products and the conservation of ancient varieties of vegetables and flowers.

INSTITUTIONS PRESENTATIONS FONDATION KRÜGER (FRANCE)

• Foundation Krüger has always been since its origins attached to a European dimension which facilitates an intercultural dialog and works in a pacific spirit. The expectations are mainly to build a larger European network of organizations working in the same aims, the personal enrichment and mind opening of all participants and mainly learners, to be better known.

INSTITUTIONS PRESENTATIONS ACLI CAMPI FLEGREI (ITALY)

• ACLI CAMPI FLEGREI (ITALY) is a Christian association of Italian workers. The association is national but operates on other nations too.

• Acli Campi Flegrei target is the community of Phlegraean Field(a district of Naples) an area with strong potential of environmental, cultural, seaside and thermal resources, but with alarming socio economic condition due to the high percentage of unemployment and the lack of financial resources of local administration to look for the instruments to revaluate the territory.


• The association works on any programme related to social promotion and organises cultural and pedagogical initiatives involving school and local community included young adults, seniors and people with special needs and at risk of social exclusion.

• Some programmes for the prevention of drug and alchol addiction are also provided as well as programmmes aiming at the promotion of Campi Flegrei naturalistic, historical and cultural heritage. Most of the work relies on the effort and devotion of a group of volunteers. The association would like to contribute to develop lifelong learning policy through experiences of partnership with other countries with the expectation of creating a European network of organizations ready to cooperate for a common aim.

CEA CAMP RODÓ (MALLORCA, SPAIN)

• CEA Camp Rodo (Spain) is a public school for Adult Education run by the local Educational authorities (Conselleria d’Educació i Cultura del Govern Balear).

• The school provides basic educational skills to adult population in general including courses for adult learners without basic qualifications, Secondary Education for adults in order to obtain the Certificate in Secondary Education. We also provide Catalan, Spanish and English courses for the general public.

INSTITUTIONS PRESENTATIONS CEA CAMP RODÓ (MALLORCA, SPAIN)

• It is a Student Association at school managed by a team of students together with a team of teachers that organises non formal education activities, social events and extra-curricular educational activities.

• In recent years our school has been involved in European projects concerning adult education. As we have a lot of immigration in our island, we have students from different nationalities, newcomers from Eastern European countries, Morocco and Latin America. This helps us to recognize and respect different cultural traditions and languages.

STUDY VISIT TO THE SOLLER BOTANIC GARDEN

GUIDED STUDY VISIT TO THE BOTANIC GARDEN AND MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY IN SÓLLER

September the 10th - Friday afternoon


• The Sóller Botanic Garden was founded in 1985 and opened to the public in 1992. It is a centre for the conservation, study and understanding of Mediterranean flora, and specifically that of the Balearic Islands.

• At this moment, we can find in the Botanical Garden of Sóller 942 different species of wild, making a total of 5.650 plants. In the Balearic area you can find 128 endemic species, to the Canary Islands 110 and in the other Mediterranean islands area about 200. Almost certainly, it is the Botanical Garden in the world with more endemic species for m2 .

Objectives of the Sóller Botanic Garden:

• - To conserve the endemic, rare or endangered plant species of the Balearics Islands, and of other Mediterranean islands and their continental areas of influence

• - To instruct and educate schoolchildren and adults, through collections of live plants, exhibitions, photographic contests, lectures, monographic publications, didactic material such as posters, leaflets etc.

• - To research conservation biology, the reproductive biology of wild species of plant, horticulture, gardening, etc.




At the end of our visit the FUE Grundtvig project group was kindly saluted by the director of the Sóller Botanic Garden and Museum of Natural History, Mr. Josep Lluís Gradaille.

SECOND WORKING SESSION

• On september the 11th morning a second working session was held with the participation of only the groups coordinators.

• In this meeting the points in our agenda related to organization, activities and calendar of the activities and of the working sessions in each of the countries involved in the project were discussed.



STUDY VISIT TO “LA GRANJA” GARDENS

• STUDY VISIT TO “SA GRANJA”MANOR HOUSE on the south Tramuntana Mountains, where we could see:

– Majorcan handcrafts live show (Tradicional country jobs)

– Majorcan Folk dancing

– The Manor house gardens (that contains the believed oldest tree in Mallocar: a “teix” –Taxus baccata- more than 2.000 years old)

STUDY VISIT TO LLUC MONASTERY

• Lluc is the most emblematic Mallorcan Sanctuary, a holy place of pilgrimage protected by mountains and woodlands. It goes back as far Roman times, when it was called “Lucus” that means “holy forest”. There, our activities consisted in:

– Visit to Our Lady of Lluc and performance of the Lluc children’s choir “Es Blauets” (the second oldest choir school in Europe) singing to Our Lady of Lluc.

– Memorial to Father Francesc Bonafé, Mallorcan botanist and author of “Mallorcan Flora”.

– Guided tour to LLUC BOTANIC GARDEN.

STUDY VISIT TO POLLENSA BAY AND FORMENTOR

• On Sunday the 13th we visited the Pollensa Bay area where we planed to visit Alcudia Sunday Market and the Formentor Peninsula.

• Despite the bad weather conditions we fulfilled our aims and had the opportunity to watch the natural habitat of Caamaerops humilis, the dwarf fan Mediterranean palm tree. We also had time to have informal talks about the FUE Grundtvig Project.

1.- The agenda was discussed on the first day. All suggestions were welcome.

2.- Between work sessions and all along the stay we had informal

and fruitful talks about the Project.

3.- We had study visits, on Friday afternoon 10th, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th.

4.- All the best was done to organize the agenda, booking the visits, departure and arrival times according to openning hours, and the established breakfast/dinner times.

5.- We had a fruitful FUE meeting in Mallorca with the expected

results.
