PHILOSOPHY

WANTED THE BASE OF OUR OFFENSIVE SYSTEM TO BE FLEXIBLE FROM YEAR TO YEAR. SOMETHING WHICH REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE/SKILLS OF THE PLAYERS WE HAD WE COULD TWEAK AS OPPOSED TO CHANGING.

DESIGNED TO ALLOW US TO CONTINUALLY APPLY PRESSURE TO THE DEFENSE

IT IS A READ AND REACT OFFENSE

DON’T HAVE TO TEACH DIFFERENT PLAYS TO CREATE SCORING OPPORTUNITIES

READ THE DEFENSE YOUR OPPONENT IS PLAYING

READ THE OTHER OFFENSIVE PLAYERS ON YOUR TEAM

REACT TO THE SITUATION.

WE CAN FLOW INTO THE MOTION OFFENSE FROM ANY SITUATIONS

TRANSITION

SETS

OUT OF BOUNDS PLAYS

ALLOWS US TO ALWAYS BE ON THE ATTACK. EVERY PASS, CUT, OR DRIBBLE CAN LEAD TO A SCORING OPPORTUNITY

Page 3: Utilizing talent with the 5 man motion offense

PHILOSOPHY (Cont.)

TO EFFECTIVELY ATTACK THE DEFENSE PLAYERS MUST UNDERSTAND

THE INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS OF EACH PLAYER ON OUR TEAM

THE OFFENSIVE STRENGTH OF THE TEAM

HOW WE ARE BEING DEFENDED BY OUR OPPONENTS

WHAT SCREENS NEED TO BE SET AND WHAT CUTS NEED TO BE MADE TO TAKE

ADVANTAGE OF THE WAY WE ARE BEING GUARDED

HOW TO APPLY THE READS AND REACTIONS IN ORDER TO ACCENTUATE OUR

INDIVIDAUL AND TEAM STRENGTHS

KEYS

SPACING: 15’-18’ APART UNLESS SETTING OR RECEIVING SCREENS

PLAY QUICK, NOT FAST: MUST BE ABLE TO SEE THE FLOOR AND READ THE

KEYS (Cont.)

REVERSE THE BALL

UNSELFISHNESS

BALL SIDE “SLOT” IS RESERVED FOR THE PERIMETER BIG MAN(THE POST NOT

POSTING). THE ONLY WAY GUARDS GET TO THAT SPOT, OR TO THE TOP OF THE

KEY, IS IF THE BIG MAN ON THE PERIMETER SETS A SCREEN FOR THEM.

THE SCREENER (Cont.)

READING THE CUTTER – MUST BE ABLE TO REACT TO THE CUTTER AND THE

DEFENDERS

CUTTER CURLS = POP BACK

CUTTER FADES = SLIP OR FILL FOR CATCH

BACK CUT = FILL FOR A CATCH

BALL SCREEN = ROLL OR HOLD BASED ON INDIVIDUAL SKILL SET

READ YOUR DEFENDER – IF THE SCREENERS DEFENDER SHOWS/HEDGES THE

SCREENER SHOULD SLIP TO THE BASKET AND LOOK TO RECEIVE THE PASS.

POST PLAYERS

NEED A CONSTANT POST PRESENCE. IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE, NOR SHOULD IT

BE THE SAME GUY THE ENTIRE POSSESSION

FORCE DEFENDERS TO DEFEND YOU IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE FLOOR,

DOING DIFFERENT THINGS EACH POSSESSION.

WHEN IN THE POST YOU NEED TO POST VIOLENTLY FOR HIGH/LOWS. FIGHT TO

HOLD YOUR SEAL.

WHEN STEPPING HIGH/BALL SCREENING, YOU MUST SPRINT.

THE MORE ACTIVE THEY ARE, THE BETTER THEY WORK TOGETHER, THE

BETTER THE OFFENSE WILL FUNCTION.

PLAYING OFF PENETRATION

It is vital that any offense creates opportunities to attack the lane off the

dribble.

We have certain ways we will move off penetration to create shots.

Middle Penetration with the Post on the Weak Side Block

Baseline Penetration with the Post on the Weak Side Block

Middle Penetration with the Post on the Strong Side Block

PLAYING OFF POST FEEDS

Post play and post touches are vital to having balance in the offense. When

the ball enters the post there are several reads our players will make and cuts

that will give the post player room to operate.

Ball Side Wing Defender “Digs, Stays, or Backs Off” = Basket Cut

Low if passer is below the mid-post

High if passer is above the mid-post

Post Double from Ball Side Wing = Spot Up, Screen Away, or Cut Through

Post Double from Weak Side = Ball Side Post Dive on the Rim and Everyone Rotate

They are the foundation for what we will do in our motion

TWO AND THREE MAN GAMES

Offense is broken down into a series of 2 and 3 man games.

These are actions happening simultaneously on each side of the floor based

on what each player reads from the offense and the defense and their

strengths.

Each action will dictate where the ball should go and what each player will do

next.

CONCEPTS

Uses

These are supplements to the base actions. They are advanced actions to further enhance our players abilities and team strengths.

Players will use them as possessions progress

Use them to take advantage of our opponents defensive weaknesses

Use them to force ourselves to screen when our screening isn’t up to par

PLAYING TO STRENGTHS

Don’t ask players to do things they are not capable of doing

Flare Screening for non-shooters

Ball Screening for players who can’t use them.

Isolations for players who can’t create a shot

Don’t shoot 3’s if you can’t make at least 33%

There are ways each player can use each action/concept to play to their strengths

Posts

If you aren’t a physical post guy then step off the block and use your skill and athleticism.

If you are aren’t a physical post, look to screen the better post guy back into the post.

If you have range on your jump shot, Jazz and hold or dribble-at and hold. If you don’t, then roll.

If you are more comfortable around the basket than in the post get yourself back in the post as soon as possible.

PLAYING VERSUS SWITCHING MAN TO

MAN

Try to set your screens big to guard and guard to big

Force mismatches and stay away. Don’t give them an opportunity to switch back.

On “like” screens – slip and don’t run to the defense

After reversals attack the lane.

Teams that switch tend to worry more about their switches than where the ball is

and their help side responsibilities
