Unit aimThis unit enables learners to consider the different factors that affect participation in sport. The unitaims to give learners an understanding of the social, individual and cultural influences that affectparticipation as well as some of the benefits of sport and physical activity.

Learners will investigate participation rates amongst different groups of people and discuss theenabling and constraining factors that influence participation rates and how these may beovercome. The unit enables learners to consider the strategies that are used by agencies toincrease participation rates amongst groups.

The unit is useful for learners who are considering a career or related units in sports development orpromotion and/or those individuals who are interested in coaching, leadership and the ‘legacy’ ofsport.

Best Practice Tips

• Don’t STOP the session too often (let them play !!!)

• Frequent praise for good play AND effort

• Relate the praise to specific actions (eg. That turn was done at exactly the right time – well done!)

• Have frequent breaks for social interaction

• Change activities on a regular basis (eg. Every 10-15 mins)

• Ensure parents/spectators adhere to the RESPECT principles
