The FIFA World Cup Trophythe golden envy of the world

DID YOU KNOW...DID YOU KNOW...

The first FIFA© World Cup Trophy was not the one we see today. French sculptor Abel Lafleur was assigned to create the original trophy for the Inaugural game in 1930. It was named the Jules Rimet Cup in 1946 after the founding father of the first World Cup. The picture above shows Rimet himself presenting the trophy to Uruguayan President of the Football Association Paul Jude after the final in 1930. Pretty sweet, Rimet.

So why don’t we use the Jules Rimet Cup anymore?

Because it was stolen. Twice. Thatʼs right. The Jules Rimet Cup has been through a lot of trial and tragedy, even after World War II ended.

The first time it was stolen was in 1966 while on display in England. A dog named Pickles led detectives of the Scotland Yard to a suburban garden and found it beneath a hedge. Pickles, you dog, you.

Pickles to the rescue.

Never to be found. When Brazil won the World Cup for a third time in 1970, regulations at the time permitted the country to keep the trophy for good. But in 1983, the trophy was stolen again in Rio de Janeiro, never to be seen again. Some people believe it was melted down by thieves. The world will never know... unless the thieves confess, which is unlikely at this point.

For his heroic act, Pickles was named “Dog of the Year” and received a free supply of food for a year.

When you think FIFA, think Pickles.

The New Design In the early 1970s, FIFA needed to create a new trophy since the Jules Rimet Cup had been sent home with victorious Brazil. Fifty-three designs were submitted to FIFA by experts from seven countries. But at last, FIFA selected a design by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga.
