"Progress was regarded in this case, as changed that improved life and ease toil. Change tended to be viewed as more ominous, however, when it brought about alterations in the character of the population or in the mores of a community. Progress could mean increase: from little to fulfillment, from overlooked to renown, from want to plenty. For those people who worked hard, it was the deserved and expected reward."
