REORIENTATIONS
Maps
These maps visualize the relation between different buildng types in Murmansk. It is striking how few single houses there are all over the city and how similar the living blocks appear.
The map showing “other buildings” are in a high number related to industry. These buildings are numerous in the outer parts of the city. They create heterogenic and differenciated spaces in contrast to the inner city.
Inteventions
I have made seven proposals of actions that could be done in order to improve the city. I want to soften the raw feeling that the inner city gives, make the industrial areas in outer city areas more available to the citizens and make people get in contact with the landscape surrounding them. Key words for my interventions are ecological processes, creativity and innovation and diversity.
In all interventions have I focused on temporality in one way or another, meaning that I am mainly throuwing the first stone into something that might become a cairn, or something totally different,

BARENTSFJORD PIER
Today most of the coast in Murmansk is not available for the citizens.
I want people to get better contact with the fjord.
I have made a pier that goes straight out on the fjord and goes down into the water.
From the end point you can sit and watch the city from afar.
If the ocean is clean enough for the salmon one can fish or take a bath and watch birds and people sailing.
In the wintertime the water freeze. Then the Pier turns out as a waiting bench for people ice skating down the fjord.
The pier can be built longer and change after needs. Maybe we find out more about the fish and seals so that we can adapt it more to their needs.
By making some of traffic through the dock, I hope this can make the coast more available for the citizens.

APPLEFARM
After doing research and finding out that apple trees, allthough not the same type in the south, do grow in the Arctic, I figured why not plant one here in Murmansk, right next to the road for cars?
Maybe this could expand, attracting birds and wildlife, and the people of Murmansk would harvest it and make cider, like a new Hardanger?
On this collage I have also made a bigger space for vulnerable road users, so that people easily could be either skiing in the winter or bicycling in the summer.
GARAGEROCK AND ARTSTUDIOS
The unique garages of Murmansk has a long history and are special to the russians not only because of their appearance, but because of the many activities and gatherings that have taken place there since the 70s. Sadly, a lot of them are being thorn down today to make place for parking houses. Fewer garage owners use their garage in the social way they used to before.
But even though the garages are loosing its previous program, they have too many positive sides to remove them completely from the city.
The offers for youth in Mutmansk are very few, even though there is being built one youth house today. I am suggesting that determined youth from murmansk
could be handed a garage as a studio for whatever crea-tive field they are pursuing.
Art, music and creativity are some of the key stones in a society.
The garages are quite easily moved, so they can move them and shape the outside area after own preferences.
It is not sure how this project would develop over time, but hopefully there would be more creative, happy youth, maybe with initiative to make cultural and social changes in the city.

THE KIWIFRUIT BACKYARD
Most of the huge building blocks in the inner city has no green area and no place for the people living there to meet and children to play.
I have made a proposal for a half inside-, half outside garden placed in the middle of the backyard.
Suggestion for plants are the arctic kiwi, arctic berries and other fruit.
The building materials are fishnets on which the plants grow. The whole structure is easily adjusted to make new spaces and facilitate the plants growth.
In spring, summer and autumn it is a blossoming flower and fruitfest, while in the winter, the snow on the net make walls and roof like an iglo, and the naked trees create diverse spaces. The organic grains softens the hard concrete block surroundin it.
This is a space that changes vastly all year round with the plants, it can also be ajusted mechani-cally by changing the wires keepin it up.
“he Arctic Beauty Kiwi is a native of Russia. The most hardy of all kiwi vines, it is able to withstand temperatures of -40 degrees, and thrives from Canada to Florida. It's vibrant shades of hot pink, white and jade colored leaves make it a perfect show piece for your garden. Another added feature of the kiwi is that it grows equally well in sun or shade, however to get the brightest colors it is best to plant it in a sunny spot. The fact that they naturally attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your yard is just another bonus you get by adding the Arctic Beauty Kiwi your garden.”
FLEXI FACTORY
Much due to the declining population, Mur-mansk have a lot of empty and decaying build-ings. Many of these can become usable by only a little work. These buildings have char-acter and make unique spaces.
I have made a new program in one of the empty factories on the coastal side of the city. The program is actually anything from con-serts, markets, exhibition area etc. With a couple of handy hands one can easily trans-form it into almost anything.
By finding a new program for one of them, there is a reason for people to hang out on this industrual part of the city which is heterogenic and full or surprises.
As a further development I hope that people can see the potensial in the old before building something completely new.
BIRDS NEST
The idea of the birds nest is to incourage people to go out of the city and and see the surrounding nature and wildlife.
It is mainly a pathway out of the city which ends up on a mountaintop nearby.
The path is easy on the landscape.
It can easily change direction and spread out grains.
The current endstop is a viewpoint where one can look at the city from afar, with a birds view, without any enormous statues next to you.
MURMANSK EXPRESS
Murmansk has many traintracks. I have made use of an unused one and turned it into a different kind travelling for murmansk citizens. It is faster, more eco-friendly than cars and more fun.
It connects my other interventions in the city.
