My name is Ryan Welch. I’m now a Sophomore and Grand Valley State University where I am going into Physical Education. I chose this topic on Hockey because this has been part of my life for the past 14 years. I have been part of many different teams throughout my life and have had many accomplishments. In high school, I played Varsity for 4 years at Davison in which I was All State my junior and senior year. I hold the record there for the most points in a career with 233 in 92 games. I later went on and was named captain of the Junior Generals in Flint, Michigan where I played a season. Last year 2007 I joined Grand Valley State University’s hockey team and now currently serving as the assistance captain. In the future I hope to someday be a coach either at the college levels or the high school level. I can be reached at welchry@student.gvsu.edu

•Learn to maintain your balance on the ice•Find your center of gravity. At first you may want to use the boards to stay balanced.

•Try to walk on your skates•This is the basic step in beginning how to skate. Again use the boards or many times they will have something for you to push while walking on the ice.

•Lean on your weak foot, then push in a diagonal direction outwards with your strong foot.

•Example would be riding a skate board. •Keep this up and begin to take longer strides and try to glide.

•As you get the basic steps to skate the next step when taking longer strides is to point the toe in which you are pushing off of. Example if your pushing with your left, left toe is pointed. This will make you faster as you skate.

•Bend your knees and move your body with the strokes. •Bending your knees will keep you balanced. Your knees are bent like your sitting on a toilet. As you push with your right foot your left arm and your body will be forward. There are many learn to skate programs if you want to learn how to skate faster. All it takes is a little practice!!

•The RinkHockey is played on a rink 200' long and 85' wide, with rounded corners. The ice surface

has painted lines on it, which indicate face-off circles, the goal crease, and the various zones. The most important lines are the red line (which runs across the center of the ice) and the blue

lines (which are parallel to the red line and are painted 73' from each end of the rink).

•The GoalsEach team has a net or goal at each end of the ice. The object of the game is to put the

puck I n the net more times than the other team does. The posts are six feet apart and the top post (or crossbar) is four feet from the ice. A red line called the goal line is painted between the

two posts, and the puck must cross this line entirely for a goal to be counted.

Officials- There are usually 2 to 3 officials on the ice of a hockey game. Two linesmen which calls Off-sides and Icing. One official usually with orange arm bands who calls the penalties

Theses are the Rules in hockey in which you CAN NOT do. If the official see you and calls a minor penalty on you, you will serve 2 minutes in the Penalty Box.
