Role and use of sports psychologists is: to work with sports men andwomen, athletes and elite athletes, across teams and individualsports. The use of sport psychology is to prepare the athletes mind for competition in the same way as the body.

Sport Psychologists may help athletes to: Deal with the stressful and demanding aspects of their professions Help coaches build team cohesiveness Help athletes deal with the emotional consequences of injuries Encouraging individuals to set goals Help athletes to cope with pressures of sport by helping individuals

to learn coping and management skills.

Goal Setting can provide:• Motivation• Commitment• Direction

By having short term and long term goals, the athlete will more likely be motivated aroused to strive for these goals.

Short-term Goal: Training four times per week for the next six weeks

Long-term goal: Representing Australia at the next Olympic games.

Visualisation is the mental rehearsal technique which involves theathletes creating a picture in their minds. This may be either an internalor external picture.

In order for visualisation to work effectively, the person must firstly, believe thatthe strategy is effective and secondly that it is a skill which requires practices,patience and time.

Visualisation can assist a person to: See and experience success Refocus before and during the event Practice skills Prepare for the performance Motivate Perfect skills Familiarise
