the Olympic games The  Olympic Games are an international multi - sport events, occurring every four years, organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In these games we can observe thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions.

Origin Of The OLYMPIC GAMESOnce every four years, men from all over Greece came to compete in a great athletic festival in Elis, in western Greece (Women were not allowed to compete). This was called the Olympic games because the place was called Olympia. It was a religious festival to honour the Greek gods Zeus and Hera.

About OLYMPIC FLAG and its SYMBOL

The design of the flag had been received by the French educator Pierre, Baron de Coubertin , who developed the modern Olympic Games. The five rings represent the five continents i.eEurope,Africa,America,Asia and Oceania

Games are the leading international sporting event featuring competitions in which thousands of athletes participate from various countries

The Olympic Games program consists of 26 sports, 39 disciplines and nearly 400 events.

The Olympic Games are considered to be the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating.

Summer Olympics• The summer games

are about 2½ years after the Winter Games.

• The Summer Olympics have competitions for sports that are considered 'warm weather sports'.

• These sports include athletics (track and field), marathon, equestrian, weight lifting, swimming etc.

Winter Olympics• The winter games are

about 1½ years after the Summer Games.

• The Winter Olympics have competitions for sports that are considered 'cold weather sports' , these sports can only be done on snow or ice.

• These sports include skiing, speed skating, ski jumping etc.

Paralympics• The Paralympic

Games is a major international multi-sport event, involving athletes with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities, including mobility disabilities.

Youth olympics• The Youth Olympic

Games (YOG) is an international multi-sport event

• The age limitation of the athletes is 14 to 18.

• The games are held every four years in staggered summer and winter events consistent with the current Olympic Games format.

Difference between ancient and modern Olympics

• Modern Olympics have added new games and events as there were in the ancient time.

• The ancient Olympics were held only throughout Greece, for Greeks; the modern Games are held around the world, for people of every nation.

• The ancient games allowed only men to compete . Women were not allowed to participate.

• In ancient times, winners were often awarded expensive prizes, including land and olives (a precious commodity in ancient times) but now in modern Olympics victorious athletes will have medals.

• In addition, modern Olympics is divided into Summer and Winter Olympics

Achievements by Indian athletes P. T. Usha, is an Indian track and field athlete from the state

of Kerala. P. T. Usha has been associated with Indian athletics since 1979. She is regarded as one of the greatest athletes India has ever produced and is often called the "queen of Indian track and field“.  P. T. Usha won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the track and field events.

Bharat Chettri is an Indian hockey player. Bharat made his debut in international hockey in 2001 playing in the Prime Minister’s Gold Cup tournament.  He was the captain of the 18-member Indian squad at the 2012 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, which won the bronze medal. Chettri led the 16-member Indian hockey squad in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Milkha Singh, also known as The Flying Sikh, is a former Indian track and field sprinter. he is the only Indian male athlete to win an individual athletics gold medal. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, in recognition of his sporting achievements.

conclusionEconomic impact :

It is estimated that the 2012 Games supported a £16.5 billion (2012 prices) contribution to UK GDP spread over 12 years. Of this, 82% is from result from the pre-Games and legacy construction activity, 12% from tourism and 6% from the expenditure required to stage the Games.

Nine of the twelve countries and regions of the UK receive at least 5% of the additional GDP generated by Olympics held at London 2012.
