OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
What is Ohio State football you might
ask??
Well……..Ohio State football is many
different things…
It all starts with tradition.
The Ohio State football team started playing games 117 years ago.
WOW!! That’s a long time to be playing
football you might say.
Some of the teams traditions include…
On game days the team walks through the basketball arena known as the Skull
Session.
The Skull Session is where the Marching
Band plays in front of a packed basketball
arena.
It is extremely loud and gets the fans blood pumping for
game days.
If you ever have a chance to go and watch the Skull
Session it will be an experience of a
lifetime.
Another tradition that you might not know
about is the walk through Buckeye
Grove
Since 1934 a Buckeye Tree has been planted in honor of each Ohio State All-American.
Buckeye Leaves on the teams helmets is
another tradition that started in 1968 by
Woody Hayes.
The more stickers a player has the more team oriented goals
they have accomplished.
After an Ohio State victory at home the 2,420 pound Victory Bell is rung while the
players sing the schools alma mater,
Carmen Ohio.
The school colors of Scarlet and Grey were
chosen because no other school had the
colors.
There mascot is Brutus Buckeye. He was
named mascot in 1960 after a slew of mascots
before him.
Brutus can be seen on the sidelines of any
game and is very recognizable.
Beating Michigan. Now that’s a tradition.
Since 1934 every time Ohio State beats rival
Michigan the team members are given a pair of gold pants.
The tradition started when then coach
Francis Schmidt told his players that “They put their pants on the same way you put your
pants on.”
One of my favorite traditions when Michigan visits
Columbus is the Tunnel of Pride.
The tunnel is formed by former Ohio State players form a tunnel
on the field for the team to run through.
One tradition that may go unnoticed is the Captains breakfast.
In the Captains breakfast former
captains come back to have breakfast and welcome the new
captains to the club.
The best rivalry in College Football is the
Ohio State vs. Michigan game.
It doesn’t get any better than Ohio State and Michigan. These
two teams have hated each other for years. Normally a Big Ten title is up for grabs
and if not the game is played for pride.
The only trophy that the Ohio State football team plays for is the
IlliBuck.
Illinois and Ohio State duke it out to see who will walk away with the
turtle that they play for. It is really a unique
trophy.
One of the best and most recognizable attributes for Ohio
State is the Block “O”
The “O” started in1938 is the Ohio State team logo.
Block “O” is also another name for the Ohio State student
section.
The Ohio State fans got the idea from the University of Southern
California. Now the Block “O” is one of the
biggest and loudest student sections in the
nation.
You can read about these traditions more
in depth at http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17300&KEY=&

You may say, “Wow, that’s a lot of
traditions.” And it is, but we are not done
yet…
Perhaps the greatest tradition at Ohio State is their marching band.
Ohio State takes great pride in their marching band. They are one of the best bands nation
wide.
One thing that separates the Buckeye marching band a part from every other band
is the fact that they are all brass.
The 200 member plus band is made up of
Trumpets, Trombones, Flugelhorns, F Horns, Sousaphones, and a
Drum section.
Because of the different
instrumentation the band has a completely
different sound.
Here you can listen to the Buckeye Battle Cry. http://tbdbitl.osu.edu/media/audio/buckeye_battle_cry.mp3
The marching band also has a couple of
traditions of their own.
Script Ohio is a song where the band
actually writes Ohio in cursive on the field.
This is really a sight to see.
At the end of Spelling out Ohio a Senior
Sousaphone player high kicks out to dot
the “I”. He then takes a couple of bow’s as the stadium erupts.
Just thinking about it sends chills through a true Ohio State fan’s
body.
Another thing that makes the band
different is the Drum Majors that they have leading the band out
onto the field.
If this information about the band has
pricked your interest you can checkout them

I hope that you can understand some of
the traditions that the University of Ohio State has to offer.
There are many more things to be
discovered about the Buckeyes from in-
depth game coverage to radio personalities
to just plain old anything about Ohio
State.
