My car and me and how we don’t get along
The patronizing UI and other annoyances of the Renault Mégane
Hans De Mondt
But, Hans, you spoiled brat…
…that’s a nice car!
Errr… yeah…
So why thrash it?
Because you actually wanted…
OK, because of it’s lousy engine then?
2 things about the engine
2nd gear
not-so-eco consumption
No, it’s because of bad UX tuning
So engineers at Renault don’t care about UX?
No, they probably care too much…
They care a lot about your well-being
Hence the car is full of sensors
Sometimes that’s fine, sometimes that’s annoying
The good
3 gordels vast achteraan
Gordel los achteraan!
The not so good
The devil is in the details
Shift gear
Seat pressure
Sensor 3: Gas tank
Range: ---------
Other annoyance 1: hierarchy in the CD player’s UI
< ALBUM 1> TRACK1
Other annoyance 2: digital dial
In conclusion
Sensors might make cars safer Feedback to drivers should be very,
very, very finely tuned or it will just add to the frustration
Don’t teach your kids the speed limits until they learn to drive themselves
