Mountains, name usually applied to any region of land that is raised rather steeply above the surrounding terrain. The elevation, or altitude, of a mountain is given as the height of the summit

above sea level. Therefore, a mountain with an elevation of, say,

4,000 m (13,100 ft) may rise to

only 3,000 m (9,840 ft) above the surrounding land.

Trigonometrical surveys provide a framework of fixed points, the relative positions of which are established with the utmost accuracy. In India the framework was to consist of meridional (north-south) and longitudinal (east-west) chains of connected triangles observed throughout the subcontinent. A base line would be measured on the ground, and the distance from

either erected by flagmen, could then be calculated by trigonometry. One of the newly calculated sides would then be used as the base line of the next triangle, without further need of direct measurement of the ground. Measurements made in this way were checked at regular intervals by astronomical observations, and allowances also had to be made for

differences of altitude, the curvature of the Earth, and the refraction of light by the Earth’s atmosphere.

The Himalaya Range, which comprise the highest mountain system in the world, extend through most of Nepal and help shape its northern border. Nine of the 14 highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest (8,850m /29,028 ft), are located either wholly or partially in the country.

Everest, Mount (Tibetan, Chomo Lungma, “goddess-mother”; Nepali, Sagarmatha, “forehead in the sky”), mountain peak, south central Asia, in the Himalaya range, on the frontier of Nepal and Tibet. Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world. The summit was previously believed to be 8,886 m (29,028 ft) above sea level, according to a 1954 Indian government survey. In November 1999, using the latest global positioning system satellite equipment, the mountain's elevation was revised to 8,850 m (29,035 ft).

Karakorum Range, Kashmir

The Karakorum Range crosses northern Pakistan and the Indian region of Jammu and Kashmir. The approximately 60 peaks average 6,600 m (22,000 ft) in height. K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, rises 8,611 m (28,250 ft), making it the range’s highest peak and the world’s second highest mountain.

Lake, large, inland body of fresh or salty standing water. The source of lake water is atmospheric precipitation that reaches the lake directly and by means of springs, brooks, and rivers.

The largest lakes in the world are the Caspian Sea and Lakes Superior and Victoria. The Dead Sea is the world's lowest lake, 400 m (1,312 ft) below sea level. The Caspian, the world's largest lake, covers an area of 370,998 sq km (143,243 sq mi). Lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake in the world, with a maximum depth of 1,637 m (5,371 ft).
