This is the
Cross-Country (XC) course used at the 2009 UCI world championships.
Riding from point-to-point or in a loop over:• a mix of rough forest paths• singletrack or doubletrack • smooth fireroads • or even paved paths connecting other trails
Technical complexity of the trails: • easy • or moderate
Choice of BikeWeight: Around 9-13 kilosSuspension: front and sometimes rear0-125 millimetres of suspension
Choice of Bike:Components: Stronger than XC modelsWeight: suitable for climbing and descending on a variety of terrainSuspension: front and rear125-180 millimetres of suspension
All-mountain (AM) Race
Trails nearly impossible even to experienced riders are more often dubbed "all-mountain", "freeride", or "downhill".
Racing-Oriented Downhill Riding
Choice of Bike:Components: large disc brakes and heavier frame tubing Weight: around 16-20 kilosSuspension: front and rear
• riding trails • jumping • performing stunts racing downhill• riding over elevated trails made of interconnecting bridges and logs
Freeride / Big Hit / Hucking requires more skill and aggressive techniques than XC
Choice of Bike:Weight: 13-18 kilosSuspension: front and rear 150-250 millimeters of suspension
Going Airborne by Dirt Jumping (DJ)The rider 'takes off' from the 'landing‘, which is a shaped mounds of dirt or soil and aims to land back on it.
generally smallerComponents: simpler with fewer components to break or cause the rider injury should it crash.Weight: built from sturdier materials, such as, steel to handle repeated heavy impacts of crashes and bails.Suspension: more manoeuvrable hardtails for backflipsTypical hardtails: only front suspension0-100 millimetres of suspension
