Designed and constructed to withstand the toughest of conditions, the Super-Fly XT is built to endure in the mountains. Used by guides and Mountain Rescue teams across Europe, this hard shell features a multiplicity of pocket options, extra vents, climbing helmet compatible hood and reinforced shoulders, elbows and hips for extra protection. This is our longest fitting shell designed to maximise coverage and accommodate winter insulation.

The descendant of the first eVent® shell from MONTANE®. Built for the British mountains, from the Lake District to the Cairngorms, the Super-Fly was developed to work hard in pouring rain or to provide complete protection from a powerful snow storm. In the 1970s scientists discovered a subglacial lake, approximately the size of the UK’s lake windermere. Named lake ellsworth, it is hidden at the bottom of a deep trough, itself hidden 3km beneath the centre of the west antarctic Ice Sheet (78°58’34”S, 090°31’04”w). Seismic studies have shown that lake ellsworth covers an area of 29km² and is roughly 150m deep.

research has revealed that antarctica’s enormous ice sheet conceals over 380 such lakes, some of which are thought to be as old as the ice sheet itself, at around 150,000 years. They exist because low heat levels emanating from the earth’s core are only sufficient to melt the base of the ice sheet. Due to their isolation from upper atmospheric conditions and climates, there is rich potential for unusual life forms, which offers scientists enormous promise for research into the evolution of life itself. Furthermore, analysis into the lake floor sediments could allow conclusions into past climate to be drawn and whether the west antarctic Ice Sheet has collapsed before.

These lakes also present opportunities for seemingly unrelated research fields; sediments on lake floors could provide insights into the extraterrestrial environment of europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.

Following an expedition to map lake ellsworth in 2008, October 2012 will see a team of 10 British engineers, multi-disciplinary scientists and camp managers explore this ancient, isolated world. They will brave extreme antarctic weather wind chills reaching -70°C coupled with gusts over 100mph – living and working for approximately eight weeks to carry out their important research.

To avoid contaminating the delicate environment sealed under the ice, an engineering team will design, construct and deploy hot water drilling technology to penetrate 3km of densely packed ice in the ice sheet above lake ellsworth. Design and construction of a sophisticated probe to take water and sediment samples from the lake will be a major objective.

This expedition has seen the creation of a Subglacial lake ellsworth consortium, funded by the Natural environment research Council (NerC), which draws together two NerC Centres of excellence; the British antarctic Survey and the National Oceanography Centre; and eight UK universities.

1. Tell us about yourself before you discovered polar exploration.I was a city girl before discovering the world of polar exploration. Born in Bradford I chose a banking career and it wasn’t until the birth of my triplets that I left that environment, where a job was considered to be for life. You could say that the arrival of my children helped me live more fully and enabled me to choose a new, more exciting career.

2. What made you take that first leap into exploring some of the world’s most inaccessible places? Sometimes opportunities present themselves at the most unlikely times and you either take them or make excuses not to. Certainly having very young children would have made the best excuse not to reply to the advert. That, plus having no experience, no kit and no time would have added to the many reasons not to have a go. But with encouragement I made the leap, gave it my best shot, even though I was probably the worst candidate who applied. I haven’t looked back since.

3. How did this first expedition inspire you? The Arctic and expedition life blew me away. It was nature at its most powerful and I found I could cope with the immense hardships faced. The raw shifting ice made me feel alive and strong but also humble and tiny. Before I didn’t think someone like me could do something so amazing as a polar expedition and it taught me that we can all achieve much more than we imagine and we shouldn’t let our own prejudices stop us reaching our potential.

4. With numerous expeditions now under your belt, what is it that spurs you on?I love the challenge of pushing myself to newer limits. It’s the hardest challenges that live with us the longest and what we get the most out of, whether it’s bringing up children well or walking to the ends of the Earth. It’s the easy path that’s forgettable and makes for a less interesting life.

5. What has been your most memorable expedition moment and why?In 2005 when attempting to walk to the North Pole solo from Russia I had five encounters with polar bears. One male bear circled my tent for a long time before we came face to face. He took a lot of persuading to leave me alone and then stalked me for three days. After that I didn’t see him again and whilst enormously relieved I also missed the thing that frightened me the most. During those three days I was in a state of heightened awareness and that bear touched me deep inside. I will never forget that experience and in some small way I will always be a part of that bear’s history. It was a special moment in my life and one I will always cherish.

MONTANE® also understands and sees the damage done to technical clothing by cheap pack back fabrics; abrasive fabrics can, like sandpaper, wear away technical shell fabrics. Add even tougher, heavier fabrics to MONTANE® shell garments and compromise the weight and breathability in this area? No! When starting the process of rucksack design, this was one of our first priorities and we worked hard to source a special fabric which will be more kind to all waterproof shell fabrics. Sweating is a natural process, part of what you could call the natural air conditioning of the human body. When we exercise our

muscles produce heat. The body must stay at a homeostatic or steadystate of temperature, therefore it must find a way to cool

itself. We balance our core temperature by sweating. Sweating essentially balances our body temperature by evaporative cooling.

WHY dO WE SWEAT?

Most common waterproof/breathable membranes

do not literally “breathe.” Instead, they move sweat

in two slow steps by a process of diffusion through

a Polyurethane (PU) layer. because PU absorbs and

retains sweat, the inside of the fabric becomes wet.

Then, body heat begins to push that dampness

through to the outside of the fabric where it can

finally evaporate—a very inefficient process.

The concept of the fabric that later became Pertex® was an idea of Hamish Hamilton, who some 30 years ago discovered that moisture would move along the microscopic capillaries within a woven fabric, spreading over a larger surface where it quickly dried.
