The Skills
Verbal Cueing(mneumonic)
A mnemonic device is any learning technique that aids in memory. Mnemonic systems are used to make memorization easier. It’s an incredibly valuable teaching tool, and very effective, when you are good at it! Ever
hear choreographers making all kinds of odd sounds when they teach a dance? It’s to emphasize desired movement style, and also to help solidify the movement in the dancers memory. We can use these tools in our
teaching. Try and say each line so it equals 8 beats.
Right Right Right Right Left Left Left Jack Jumps
Out together, Out together, Out together, Ski…er
Right Left Right Left Right Left Bell Jumps
Front back front back front back ready-to-turn
One two three four turn around jump, jump-down
Steps to Success• Teach Each Skill Individually
• Once students can perform the skill, try doing it side by side with someone else.
• Work on memorizing the whole routine individually. (even with no rope)
• Work in a group, just a few skills at a time.
• Be PATIENT - Group routines are challenging and take time to master.
• Choose music with a good solid beat (120-135 BPM) (see resources)
