I AM NOT DEAD100 years ago, Herne Bay was one of the coolest places on the planet. In August 1913, Marcel Duchamp arrived
deeply depressed and contemplating giving up art altogether. I am not dead, Marcel wrote to his friend Man Ray on a postcard, I am in Herne Bay. But after a month by the sea, Duchamp became convinced of the total absurdity of the
art world; and indeed, perhaps, of our entire universe. So, refreshed and intellectually invigorated, Duchamp returned to Paris to become the founding father of Dadaism, Surrealism and the whole modern/conceptual art
movement.
So to recognise Herne Bay’s contribution to the Animus Mundi and the Zeitgeist of human artistic achievement, we have organised a festival of all things Marcel Duchamp to celebrate the centenary of his visit to the English seaside by
the most influential modern artist there has ever been.
Seven of the world’s most renowned art academics and Duchamp experts are holding a symposium here to discuss how our town changed the world in August 1913 – and how it is changing it in ways you can still feel the effects today.
About 40 recognised artists, including Yoko Ono are contributing original works inspired by Duchamp’s moment in Herne Bay. The list of events and activities grows by the week, as does the number of national newspapers and TV
programmes signing up to cover it, including the Guardian, the Telegraph and the BBC.
HUMAN TIDE takes place on August 9th and will be the only live piece of mass participation art during the festival.

THE IDEA
Human Tide / 3 Standard Stoppages
Using the random line of the tide’s edge to recreate the ‘chance’ captured
in the original work, we will mark where the sea meets the beach with a 1000 meter line of light, captured at
precise intervals.

So Human Tide is a piece of mass participation intervention that takes place along a stretch of the Kent Coast at Herne
Bay.
We will be walking 1000 meters along the beach with powerful lights where the water meets the beach as the tide
comes in.
We will do the walk 3 times over the course of the turning tide. Creating a new version of 3 Standard Stoppages.
Each walk will be shot with a special camera set up that will allow us to ‘draw’ in light on film, effectively capturing where
the tide edge was when we walked along it.
Its never been done before.

PROOF OF CONCEPTTo make this and the following images we walked 500 meters
along the edge of the tide with a 3 meter long light stick
For the event we will be walking precisely 1000 meters. We will do this 3 times, making a film of each walk.

Soundscape
I want to create an ambient soundscape of the walk in binaural stereo.
I really like the idea of being an observer of the action at a distance, but being
brought into the thick of it with the sound of people walking through the water.
