Hockey Systems
Defensive Zone• As the puck moves around the ice
in the defensive zone each player has a section of the ice to attack opposing players.
• If there is two opposing players on the puck player may leave their zone to help out another player.
• They key to a good defensive zone is winning 1 on 1 match-ups and intercepting passes.
• Always keep the puck to the boards. Plays in front of the net can make a scoring chance for the opposing team.
Breakout
• Breakout is the best way to get the puck out of your end of the ice, and to the opposing teams end.
• When breaking out players need support so breakout players can pass and get the puck out.
Two Player Forecheck
• Forecheck is to send a player or two down to pressure the opposing team player in the defensive zone.
• If forecheck is done correctly then the opposing team will lose the puck and hopefully give the attacking team a scoring opportunity.
Dump and Chase Offensive Zone
• This is the most effective way to move the puck into the offensive zone.
• This is a good way to start a forecheck and maybe even have a scoring chance.
Offensive Zone Cycling
• Three offensive players should maintain a triangle as they attack the opposing goal.
• This cycling helps to open up players for scoring chances and makes the defensive players get confused and skate out of position.
Power Play
• Power play is when your team has more players than the opposing team because of a penalty.
• On the power play you want to keep the puck in the center of the ice…(prime scoring area) to try and make scoring chances.
• When you are on the power play it is the best time to score a goal.
Penalty Kill
• When on the penalty kill your team has less players than the opposing team because of a penalty.
• While on the penalty kill in the defensive zone you want to keep a box and try to keep the puck out of the prime scoring area.
