The Grand National is an equestrian competition in England. It is the most valuable jump race in Europe.
This competition came from the tradition of hunting. Officially the first time was held at Aintree, near Liverpool, in 1839. It was attended by 17 competitors, who galloped over 6 kilometres of fields, fencing pens a few sheep and three major obstacles: a wall and two streams.
The race is held annually on a Saturday afternoon in early April.
The horses have to be strong, disciplined and intelligent because they have to jump and gallop 30 obstacles along a rough trail of 7 kilometres.
The race consists of two laps to Aintree circuit, with 16 obstacles in the first and 14 in the second.
You can have up to 40 horses in competition. It is a race very risky
The greatest legend of Grand National is the horse Red Rum, winner in three editions.The race was not held between 1916 and 1918 or between 1941 and 1945, during the World Wars.
The 2013 Grand National was won by Auroras Encore ridden by jockey Ryan Mania for trainer Sue Smith.
