Garmin claims:
On average our units are accurate to 15 meters.
So…what does this mean for us?
Applications of GPS
• Navigation (example – Driving)
• Emergency Cell Location
• Scientific Applications (GIS)
– Surveying, tectonics, map making
• Aircraft Tracking
• Pet/Child Tracking
• Geocaching
GIS
Geographic Information System
• Capture, store, manipulate, analyze all types of geographically referenced data
Geocaching
• An outdoor game, where a GPS receiver is used to hide and seek containers known as “geocaches”
Geocaching• One person ‘hides’ a container, making a note
of the location with their GPS receiver
• They share this location with others, who will then go and ‘seek’ the item
Geocaching
• What do you do when you find it??
– Sign the logbook (initials, date)
– Trade items
– Place the cache back EXACTLY as you found it!
Other Geocaching Guidelines
• Do no trample ANY flowers/important plants
• Watch out for ‘muggles’ (non-geocachers)!
• Place the container back exactly as you found it
