Richard Ayoade’s visual style, genre, editing style and stylistic

influences • Richard Ayoade works with mainstream indie

rock bands, such as Arctic Monkeys.• The artists tend to narrate the story behind the

video and star as themselves in the live performances.

Page 5: Girls Aloud - Jump

He tends to use a lot of live performance in his videos and uses lighting to emphasise the artists. In this and the lyrics/song title are

visualised because they are literally standing next to each other.

‘Last Shadow Puppets – Standing Next To Me’

• His videos appear on music channels such as

• He won best video at the NME awards in February 2009 for Last Shadow Puppets’ My Mistakes Were Made For You.

• He has produced videos with spectacular special effects (arctic monkeys - crying lightning) but in contrast very simple videos (vampire weekend – oxford comma)

In his videos, the artists are often playing their instruments, though instead of a the usual live performance of the band playing, the artists are standing in the same location as the video is shot in.

e.g. In ‘The Last Shadow Puppets – My Mistakes Were Made For You’, Miles Kane is leaning up against the car playing the guitar whilst Alex Turner walks past him as if ignoring each other.

Why I like his work…• The main reason I chose Richard Ayoade is because I

like all the bands he has directed videos for.• My favourite video he has directed is Last Shadow

Puppets – Standing Next To Me, because of the clever lightning and the simplicity of them standing in a black room.

• I like his videos because of the simplicity; the low budget videos for vampire weekend, the clever/complex videos for the last shadow puppets which have the ‘repeatability factor’ and ‘crying lightning’ which has amazing special effects, but was probably actually very easy to shoot. complexity and the amazing factor. His work has inspired me, because I like the way he focuses on the live performance of the band.
