Step One: Do Something; Get Data

• Start your app. Stop your app! SAVE your session!!!

Step Two: Get Data Out of App

• Useful to open MapMyRun or Strava from Desktop

A. MapMyRun – Copy the 8 Digit workout number from the URL

B. Strava – Copy the entire URL

Step Two (cont): Extract Files

Strava will try to send the to a device attached to your computer. Choose the “download the CRS file” option instead.

Step Three: File Conversion • Now you have either a *.gpx or a *.crs file

saved to your machine. *.kml for Foursquare. (If you have a Garmin device, you probably know the *.gpx file format and are already at this point.)

• Right click, and choose ‘Rename’. (I prefer to copy first, then change the copy version)

• Change the file extension to *.xml

• You might receive an warning message, disregard.

• Steve to talk about XML here…

Open XML File in Microsoft Excel Truthfully, I prefer Alteryx for this step…

You may see these, but don’t worry:

• Delete columns that are not needed • Change headings as needed • Add a Point Order column!! (Required for Tableau Mapping!)

• Add a Point Order column!! (Required for Tableau Mapping!) • Point Order is for paths/routes. Not necessary for Foursquare.

Save file as *.xls or *.xlsx, or any format readable by Tableau.
