NEWBURGH (2-2) – Hard to take the Goldbacks out of the rankings after a 27-21 loss to Monroe-Woodbury, a perennial Section Nine champ, not to mention playing without the suspended Anthony Dubose. They’ll meet again.

MARLBORO (2-2) – The Iron Dukes jump back into the rankings after a convincing 52-7 road victory at Rondout Valley in a rematch of last year’s Section Nine, Class B title game. Expect Marlboro to continue its climb – the Dukes should run roughshod through league play until meeting Highland.

WALLKILL (3-1) – And now it gets real. The Panthers have had a fantastic start to the season – one point separates Wallkill from an unbeaten year – but now they get three consecutive road games starting at Poughkeepsie, and then have the regular-season finale at home to Cornwall.

ARLINGTON (3-1) – Here’s another team that just finds a way. The Admirals had only five first downs against Clarkstown South on Saturday to 13 for South, and ran only 34 plays to Clarkstown’s 64. Yet they put two touchdowns on the board in the third quarter and won for the third straight time, 14-3.

BEACON (4-0) – How do you not like this team? The Bulldogs have done whatever they’ve needed to do to get to this point. They’ve done it with offense, done it with defense and on Saturday did it with a big special teams play by Jon Underwood. Somers and John Jay-Cross River loom, though.

MILLBROOK (3-1) – No shame in going on the road and losing your first game to a higher-class team by one point on a last-minute field goal. The Blazers drop from No. 2 after the loss to Highland but the real season, the league season, starts now.

HIGHLAND (4-0) – The Huskies look to be on a collision course with Marlboro in the final regular season game of the year. Lots of football to be played before that, but Highland is resilient and just finds a way to win – coming back from 14-0 and 30-21 down to beat Millbrook.

LOURDES (4-0) – The Warriors lit up Edgemont on Sunday, 48-7, and are steamrolling through Section One, Class B. Once they started to develop a ground game it’s made quarterback Dean Rotger’s passing game that much sharper. There’s a long way to go but OLL can see Marlboro or Highland in the states.

ROOSEVELT (4-0) – We said in the beginning of the year we liked FDR as our sleeper team but this is like Lazarus stuff. The Presidents’ defense? You get one crack at a score and you better hope you can make it stand up. So far, nobody has in four games.

JOHN JAY (3-1) – As expected, the Patriots crushed their Wappingers Central School District rival Ketcham, 46-0. Ryan Schumacher has come into his own at the quarterback spot. Jay gets another home game Thursday night against Fox Lane with a chance to stay unbeaten in the league.
