After arriving in Manapouri we headed to Pearl Harbour to load the Real Journeys boat to travel across Lake Manapouri. We headed for the one and only Power Sta-tion. The views from the boat were scenic.

AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE WE UNLOADED THE BOAT ONTO THE BUS AND WALKED INSIDE THE VISITORS CENTRE.IN SIDE THE VISITORS CENTRE WE HAD A QUESTION AND TALK TIME WITH OUR GUIDE KATHY. IN THE VISTORS CENTRE THERE WAS A MINI DIAGRAM OF THE POWER STATION.AFTER GETTING ON THE BUS AND TRAVAILING TWO KILOMETERS DOWN A WIDE TUNNEL (THAT DID A 360 DEGREE LOOP) WE WENT TO SEE THE TURBINES.THE TURBINES ARE GREAT, BIG, BLUE MACHINES THAT TRANSFER THE WATER INTO HYDRO POWER. THE TUNNEL WAS BUILT A LONG TIME AGO, SO THEY HAD TO USE THE DRILL AND BLAST METHOD TO CREATE THE TUNNEL. THIS IS WHERE THEY BRING OUT THE DYNAMITE. IN THE TUNNEL THERE WERE WHITE CIRCLES WITH BLACK NUMBERS.THESE NUMBERS WERE PLACED EVERY 20 OR SO METRES. THESE ARE THE NUMBERS THAT TELL THE WORKERS HOW FAR INTO THE TUNNEL THEY ARE. ABOUT EVERY COUPLE OF HUNDRED METRES THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY PHONE SO THAT IF THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY, THE WORKERS COULD GET HELP FASTER. AFTER FINISHING THE GUIDED TOUR WE TRAVELLED OVER THE SNOWY WILMOT PASS. HALF WAY UP WE STOPPED AT THE PLATEAU TO LOOK DOWN AND OUT INTO DEEP COVE. BEFORE WE LEFT, OUT POPPED A DREAM. A KIA FLEW PAST US. AFTER TRAVELING DOWN THE REST OF THE PASS, TO OUR SURPRISE THERE WAS A WEKA THERE TO MEET US.AFTER GOING OVER THE RULES WE HEADED INTO THE WILDERNESS OF BRASSEL POINT. AT BRASSEL POINT THERE WERE WEKA EVERYWHERE. AFTER DOING A QUIZ WE CAME TOGETHER TO HAVE A POTLUCK FEAST OF MAINLY

DAY ONE CONTINUED.

On the cruise we saw lots and lots of scenic views. From snowcapped mountains to thundering waterfalls. Out the end of the sound there are there are two predator free is-lands. Predator free means that there are no pests such as possums, ferrets, hares, stoats or rats. But there may be a chance of the odd deer to swim across. Kokako are now successfully breeding on the islands. When we got back from the amazing doubtful sound cruise, we headed inside the hostel to have a warm cup of milo. After that, we were all pumped up and ready to attack the hanging valley.

The best part would probably be trying to get up the slippery rock and trying not to slip over on all of the roots. The views on top were amazing! We could see right down into Doubtful and up all the neighbouring ranges and gullies.

Glow worms are easy to see in Deep Cove, because it is so remote that there is no traffic or things that can pollute their habitat. Walking along the road and looking into the bushes, staring back at us were lots of tiny glow worms. They were sitting in the middle of the bushes and trees. When we were about to head back to the hostel we lay like starfish on the road and stared at the stars and satel-lites. The satellites were flying through the sky like shoot-ing stars.
