REVIEW
2015
EARLY SEASON – A PROMISING START!
- January saw over THIRTY Condors turn up to Joe Perks for a race season meeting, where we planned our battle strategy for both Men and Women and managed to grab some new people to start racing!
- Mike Devaney and Bradders grab some points (and cash!) at Hillingdon. Check out Bradders training here;
TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN…….But do we train too much?Shadders arranges a talk by Dr Richard Baskerville on
Overtraining syndrome
Key message – rest can be good!
LADIES GETTING’ SERIOUS (APRIL)- Laura and the gang start the ladies only chain gang. Much
pain ensues!- https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCpQkSbKvMM&feature=youtu.be
THAMES VELO ROAD RACE – A CORNER TOO FAR- An amazing team performance by the 5 Condors who
manage to genuinely control a race and get Mike D to the front for the finish. Bradders and Matt finishing strongly also
- Race highlight- Brett launches attack with 2km to go and manages to bin it
on his own into a corner.
ORRL PLANNING CONTINUESAs the founding club for the
league, we have driven developments where possible.
This year, our first women only race planned.
- Steve T, Richard Q and Jonny hard at work at a planning meeting!
PREPPING FOR THE BIG ONE…. SILVERSTONE!With 4 teams available, selection was tight and required over 5
different qualifying events !- The mens 1sts, womens 1sts and mixed mens 2nd/3d team
got a run out for Team Time Trialling at Weston for the Opening round of the ORRL…..
- Here is some on board footage of the mens 1sts…… SAVAGE! (click through to 30 seconds in)

WOODSTOCK WONDERSThe ladies put on a huge show at the new “Woodstock Classic”
race, with Aimee storming to 3rd from a strong field.
CLUB TIME TRIALS AND SEWTTSCathy and Brett set up the Time Trial committee, with Time
Trials planned on a monthly basis on the Stadhampton 10 course
WinnersApril – Dan Bigham, Aimee FenwickMay – 25miles – Sam Calder.July – Jonny Revis, Ruth CorriganAug – Mike Devaney, Tyra Rivkin
Laura C start her successful campaign in the SEWTTS league, traveling far and wide to represent the Condors! (picture above of Laura at rnd 6 of the ORRL)
SILVERSTONE!Our biggest event of the year by far – 36 Condors competing in
an 11mile 9 man TTT!Great efforts by all!
OXFORDSHIRE RR LEAGUE – WOMEN'S TEAM- Our ladies had a great season, taking the overall club win!- Laura leads the league but is overhauled at the last, taking a
very credible 2nd overall to Lydia Brookes of GS Henley- A whole raft of new ladies try races, with nearly half of the
field at the Dalton Barracks race being Condors!
OXFORDSHIRE RR LEAGUE – MEN- After a few results last year, we had big plans for 2015…….- Which we actually managed to pull off!- Our men lead the league from round 2 to round 6, despite a
shaky start at the the TTT (4th ), Below, Brett, Andy and Perry bleeding from the eyeballs!
OXFORDSHIRE RR LEAGUE – MENWIN! _ Mike Devaney takes an excellent men's individual result,
leading from start to finish and never dropping off the podium in league points when he raced
- Ably supported by an excellent team, with Dan Bradley and Matt T finishing in the points, and Andy Ruane coming strong at the end of the season with a top ten finish at Great Milton.
CONDORS ORRL ROUNDHUGE THANKS to Steve Tearne for again putting together a
great race,!Note – this race provides income to offset many developments
in the club, so big thanks to all the volunteers who helped this run.
Below – Matt Thomas’s gurning win at the finish.
HILL CLIMB PAINA great event, ably organised by Cathy, Brett and Richard Q- A field of 40 battled it out on Hill Road (A.K.A Christmas
Common) on a foggy September morning- Dan Bigham took the overall, with a new course record! (I
think?)- Matt T turns up late and somehow manages to put in a
massive performance for the Condor men's win!- Cathy Naylor, battles it out with Aimee and comes away with
a well deserved win – which she consolidates by handing out pain to all the boys on the Wales trip a week later.
THE BELGIANS ARE COMING!We now have a new
field of interest, started by our resident mud lover – Andy H.V
- CYLCOCROSS!
- Speak to Andy Haynes if interested!
THANKS- Ollie Jaques, always manages to fill gaps when things fall through!- Steve T for organising our race, such a big job- Cathy and Brett – Sorting such good time trials- Richard Quayle – most helpful person you could ever wish to meet. He
underpins a lot of our big events!- All the volunteers who have held people up, stopped traffic, handed up
bottles…..
- All the people who compete. Chapeau to the lot of you!
- Jonny R, Race sec
- Its been a hoot!
Club Survey• 1st time club has conducted such a survey
• 64 completed the survey. 46% of members – fantastic!
• Generate action points to help guide board in 2015/16
• Will be ran annually or when club embarks on a new initiative
**Always want your feedback**
Club Survey – Some Highlights• 88% were happy they could find the right ride group for them.• 58% rated ride leading at 4 out of 5 (5 being superb). 33%
scored ride leading at 5 out of 5.• 51% thought £30 membership fee was about right. 46%
thought £30 was a bargain or would pay more – no immediate plans to increase!• 96% were happy to volunteer time at Condor events• 80% have recommended the Condors to a friend or colleague!• 97% cast a vote of 3 – 5 indicating they believe the club is
democratic in the sense members’ views are recognised and are helping to shape the club.
• Better promotion of member benefitsNo promises on these though: “Clippings from Jonny's beard (only for those paying online and early, perhaps)”“Presidential massages”
• Further ride skills and sessions, to include:• Time Trial training techniques• Nutrition• Race Training rides• Winter Training• Cornering• First Aid sessions
• Clear development pathways for riders of all abilities – including men & women working closer together in certain areas, e.g. Training activities.
• A greater variety of social events, including daytime activities.
• KTFUOFTFO – decision to be made on future. Move to racing side of the club?
Club Survey – Good insights
• Website functionality additions:• Expansion of Route Library on website with more GPX/TPX files. Benefit of giving
ride leaders more confidence.• Website document repository:
• Newsletters• Skills session guides• Ride Leader training material
• More bike maintenance sessions with partners such as Broken Spoke and/or Beeline
• Raise the profile of the board, in particular the duties each role carries out.
• One, perhaps, for the next board to decide on:• “I told Brett about this amazing idea I had for chain gang style speed dating. Other
people thought it was an awesome idea. Brett told me he would bring it up at the next meeting but I feel like he might have said that to stop me going on about it...”
…cont’d
Club Survey – some lovely feedback
• “Only bike club in Oxford providing a 'way in' for adults of all abilities and a way of progressing through named groups - this is the main selling point.”
• “I'm very proud to be a part of it, I've loved every minute, and it plays a major part in my enjoyment of Oxford life.”
• “I'd like to thank everyone who's contributed to the club in the past year - to me it seems to have grown hugely and very positively. Oxford's friendliest cycling club is still that, only bigger.”
• “I have enjoyed my cycling more than ever before this summer, met some fantastic people and I'm excited about winter training for the first time!”
Thank you!
Condors rides & Ride Leadership
A summary of the things we’re doing well and ways we’re looking to improve.
Condors Rides “Hoping that there will be some slower social groups/rides for newbies just joined from the ladies' summer sessions”
“I think the social-dev ride is a great addition” "On occasion riders on the screamer are strong enough but don't have the bike handling experience, might be worth stressing more that the screamer is only for experienced riders.”
“Generally fine, only problem is people sometimes going faster than advertised.” “I think Tom's idea of 'change up Tuesday' once a month is excellent and we should definitely bring this in. It will help people progress more easily and mix with others. I'd like to see more weekend options for social riders. Fast people can go on any ride they like but slower/newer people usually only have one option they have to take or leave.”
“The influx in membership means that there now tend to be enough groups going out to find a good crowd at the right speed”
Condors Rides - considerations• Advertising of rides. Not everyone has access to social media at their work-place.
• When weekly rides are posted. Feedback received indicating detail of rides are often posted too late in the day, especially on weekends, meaning it’s hard to plan.
• More riders need to know/learn routes or add the ride route to a GPS device.
• Beeline in winter – grass next door will be wet. Need to ensure we don’t dominate the pavement area.
• A mechanism to report back incidents or concerns experienced on a ride.
• New riders to only come on Tuesday evening rides in winter months.
• Post ride meeting venue - a highlight for many. Consider new venues due to Rick’s bike storage limitations.
Ride Leadership“excellent - so friendly, helpful, interested, inclusive, knowledgeable”
“It can be frustrating when people are in the wrong group so try to turn a medium ride into a fast one”
“Some medium rides have been a touch on the gung-ho side, with 'holes' being shouted rather than pointed at and new riders not being asked beforehand if
they've ridden in a group before and know the signals.”
“Once a leader was verbally aggressive with traffic, didn't really engage with the group, and got completely lost. Otherwise ride leading has been spectacular.”
“It is sometimes difficult for less experienced leaders to reign in faster group members”
“I think there are some 5* star leaders in the club”
Ride Leadership - considerations
Initiatives introduced:• Ride Leader forum (Facebook group)• Ride Leader training – expanding from social to include faster groups• Buddy system for new ride leaders• Ride Leader checklist – laminated card available at Beeline
• Organise ride groups closer to 6.15 than 6.30 to avoid pre-ride confusions.
• Ensure group know the average speed before departing, and policy on dropping. i.e. medium paced rides should be non dropping.
• Encourage ride leaders to train new groups and pass on experience
More recognition for ride leaders - They do a wonderful job
