Common challenges in cities all over the world!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
For the last 50 years making room for cars have been in focus when planning cities all over the world But congestion, noise, air polution, climate change, obesity and immobility have called for a new approch Focus on cycling – takes up less space than cars, CO2 neutral, healthy
Page 7: Cities For Cyclists Weinreich Vekso

Code word: Livable cities

Presenter
Presentation Notes
But it is no longer just about getting people out of their cars on biks – it a complete shift in paradigme It about creating cities for people instead of cities for cars It’s about quality of space It’s about quality of life Cities for people = cities for walking and cycling! Cities all over the world are changing their focus – Public bikes in Paris, London and more dramatic changes in other cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Mexico city and New York

Step 1:Think of a child that you love and care for who is approximately 8 years of age. This could be a child, grandchild, sister, brother, cousin etc.

Step 2:Think of an adult, approximately 80 years of age who you love and care for. This could be a parent, grandparent, friend etc.

Step 3:Ask yourself: Would you send that 8 year old along with the 80 year old on a walk, or a bike ride on that infrastructure? If you would, then it is safe enough, if you would not, then it is not safe enough.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
But it is also visionary people like Gil Penelosa – executive director the orginasation 8-80 cities, former commissioner for parks, sports and recreation in Bogota 8-80 rule of thumb! Would you send that 8 year old along with the 80 year old on a walk, or a bike ride on that infrastructure? If you would, then it is safe enough, if you would not, then it is not safe enough.

Danish infrastructure for cyclists

• Cycling = a mode of transportation• Infrastructure = Safe, fast, coherent, logical

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Copenhagen have 350 km bicycle paths, 40 km green routes The Danish way to succes: Safe, fast, coherent, logical infrastructure One-way separated bicycle paths – separated from both pedestrians and motorized vehicles Blue markings in crossings Separate traffic lights for cyclists Shared space in low speed areas - Cycling has status as an independent mode of transportation – very important – not quite the case in Norway – I’ll get back to that later
Page 14: Cities For Cyclists Weinreich Vekso

Bicycle parking facilities

Presenter
Presentation Notes
It’s important to have enough parking spaces, with the right functionality at the right place – and it’s important to think about bicycle parking in every project made City of Aarhus 250.000 inhabitents – city center 9000 parking spaces for bicycles Oslo – 590.000 inhabitents – I don’t think you have 20.000 parking spaces for bicycles in the city center
Page 15: Cities For Cyclists Weinreich Vekso

How to create a city of cyclists

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Experiences from Denmark as as many other cities show, that there are 3 important dimensions that needs to be addressed to create a cycle city The policy dimension: Political courage, visions – with out political commitment it will not happen! The urban space have to be designed for cyclists – that means that city planning have to focus on pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, because PT and cycling is a god and sustainable combination And last but not least the different stakeholders in the city need to be involved and there has to be a dialogue

Presentation Notes
This approach is at the moment used in the EU Interreg.-project Nordic Cycle cities, where 11 cities fra DK, NO and SE over a period of three years is working with cycling promotion   - The cities are: Frederikshavn (lead partner), Viborg, Silkeborg and Randers in Denmark, from Norway Kristiansand and Sandefjord and Varberg, Mölndal, Svenljunga, Mariestad and Tranemo from Sweden. - The 11 municipalities are very different geographical, topographical and demographical and have very different experiences with promoting cycling.   - Their experiences depend among other things of the local cycling culture, national traditions, cycle traffic legislation, local political focus and differences in organization and resources.   - The modal split for cycling is also very different – in the Danish cities the modal split is between 16-25%, in the Swedish cities around 10% and in the Norwegian cities 6 %.

Nordic Cycle Cities

Ad hoc planning

Integrated approach

Presenter
Presentation Notes
- The 11 municipalities share the same challenges:   - They need to shift gears and work more integrated and systematically with cycling instead of ad hoc - and they need to get cycling on the agenda politically as well as organisatorically.
Page 25: Cities For Cyclists Weinreich Vekso

Bicycle strategy

Bicycle action plan

Bicycle account

Presenter
Presentation Notes
- To make sure that the critical success factors are addressed – all the partners in the project have to produce 3 very important documents:   - A local bicycle strategy which sets up political visions and goals for bicycle traffic.   - An action plan, which shows how they will reach the goals set up in the cycling strategy.   - 2 bicycle accounts (before and after) where they monitor and evaluate the development in the local bicycle traffic and the cyclist satisfaction with the conditions. To secure ownership to the strategy both politicians, different stakeholders as well as different departments in the counsel have to be involved in the process of drawing up the documents. The documents also have to be political enacted when finished

Barriers i Oslo/Norway

• Cycling not considered a mode of transportation with special needs for infrastructure– Cycling allowed on pavements, in walking streets – not

good for anybody!– The bicycle infrastructure not coherent, lots of missing

links, not consistent– Mix of one way and two ways cycle paths confusing– Maintanance not good enough– Bicycle parking not sufficient

• Topography• Culture
