Its acronym ,in French ,was thus FIBA ;the “A” standing for amateur. Basketball was first included in the Olympic Games in 1936, although a demonstration tournament was held in 1904. The United States defeated Canada in the first final, played outdoors .This competition has usually been dominated by the United States ,whose team has won all but threetitles, the first loss in a controversial final game in Munich in 1972 against the Soviet Union. In 1950 the first FIBA World Championship for menwas held in Argentina.

College Basketball and Early Leagues

Naismith was instrumental in establishing college basketball .He coached at the University of Kansas for six years before handing the reins to renowned coach Forest “Phog” Allen . Naismith’ s disciple Amos Alonzo Stagg brought basketball to the University of Chicago, while Adolph Rupp , a student of Naismith’ s at Kansas , enjoyed great success as coach at the University of Kentucky .In1892,University of California and Miss Head’s school ,played the women’s inter –institutional game. Berenson’s freshmen played the sophomore class in the front women’s collegiate basketball game at Smith College ,March 21 ,1893. The same year ,Mount Holyoke and Sophie Newcomb College women began playing basketball. By 1895, the game had spread to colleges across the country,including Wellesly, Vassar and Bryn Mawr. The first Intercollegiate women’s game a on April 4,1896.Stanford Womenplayed Berkeley,9 –on9,Ending in a 2-1Stanfordvictory.

U.S High School Basketball

Before widespread school district consolidation , most United States high schools were far smaller than their present day counterparts. During the first decades of the 20 th century, basketball

quicklybecame the ideal interscholastic sport due to its modest equipment and personal requirements .In thedays before widespread television coverage of professional and college sports ,the popularity of high school

teams was Indiana’s Franklin Wonder Five ,which took the nation by storm during the 1920’s ,

dominatingIndiana basketball and earning national recognition .Today virtually every high school in the United States fields a basketball team in

varsity competition .The states of Illinois ,Indiana and Kentucky are particularly well known for their resident’s devotion to high school basketball,commonly called Hoosier Hysteria in Indiana.

Free Throw

A free throw is the privilege given player to score one point

by an unhindered attempt for the goal from a position

directly behind the free throw line. This attempt must be

made within 10 seconds.

Held ballA held ball occurs when two opponents

have one or both hands firmly on the

ball .A held ball cannot be called until

both players have both hands so firmly on

the all that neither can gain sole

possession without undue roughness.

If a player is sitting on the floor while

in possession, he should have an

opportunity to throw the ball , but a held ball is called when

there is a danger of injury .

Pivot A pivot takes place when a player who

is holding the ball steps once or more

than once in any direction with the

same foot, while the other foot –called

the pivot foot is being kept at its point

of contact with the floor.

TravellingTravelling is progressing in any direction while in possession of the ball , which in excess of prescribed limits

ScreenA screen is the legal actionof a player who, without causing undue contact ,delays or prevents an opponent from reaching adesired position.

Field Goal AttemptA field goal attempt is a player’s attempt to shoot the ball into his basket for a field goal .The attempt starts when the player begins the motion which habitually precedes theactual shot .It continues until the shooting effort ceases

and he returns to a normal floor position .The term is also usedto include the movement of the ball in flight until it has become dead or has been touched by a player.

Throw inA throw is a method of putting the ball in play from out of bounds in accordance . The throw begins when the disposal of the team or player entitled to it and ends when the ball is released by the thrower in.

Scoring and Timing

Scoringa.A legal goal is madewhen a live ball enters thebasket from above andremains in or passes through the net.b.A successful fieldgoal attempt from the areaon or inside the three point field goal line shall count two points.c.A successful field goal attempt from the area outside the three- point field goal line shall count three points. (1)The shooter must have at least one foot on the outside the three –point field goal line prior to the point.(2)The shooter may not be touching the floor on or be inside the three –point field goal line.(3)The shooter may contact the three-point field goal line , or land in the two point field goal area, after the ball is released. d.A field goal accidentally scored in an opponent ‘basket shall be added to the opponent’s score, credited to the opposing player.

Timing

a. All periods of regulation play in the NBA will be twelve minutes.

b. All overtime periods of play will be five minutes .

c. Fifteen minutes will be permitted between halves of all games.

d. 100 seconds will be permitted for regular timeouts and between the fourth period and /or any overtime periods.130 seconds will be permitted between the first and second periods and the third and fourth periods.

e. A team is permitted 30 seconds to replace a disqualified player.

f. The game is considered to be in the two –minute part when the game clock shows2:00 or less the time remaining in the period.

g. The public addresses operator is required to announce that there are two minutes remaining n regulation and any overtime periods.

the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks .Costing over175 million dollars this 960,000 square foot building holds over

Just some interesting facts After each game an average of 7 to 10 tons of garbage is thrown out by audience and concession stands . Outside the arena is a statue of MichaelJordan called “The Spirit” created by Julieand Omri Amrany.Eye in the Sky by the Alan Parsons Projectis played during the starting introductionsof every Chicago Bulls.In the Bulls weight room of the United Center there are brown champagne stains marks on the ceiling tiles after the 96.97and 98 NBA celebrations.
