A StrAtegy For giving
the oFFiciAl
“It’s not just about changing a child’s life – anyone’s
life – for a day or a week. I’ve been blessed to see
someone live their dream. Not just my mom’s dream, but
their dream also.” – Warrick Dunn
“When you’re given a platform, you have an opportunity. I
definitely think my early success was the catalyst for
me to say ‘Am I just going to take, or am I going to
give?’ ” – Andrea Jaeger
“Growing up, skateboarding had a negative stigma, and
there were very few outlets for kids like myself to go.
As the sport of skateboarding has grown, I’ve had the
opportunity to build skate parks in cities all over the
U.S., and I love the fact that kids now have an outlet to
express themselves in this way.” – Tony Hawk

“Service to others is the rent you
pay for your room here on earth.”
– Muhammad Ali
“It’s about redefining what
we strive for – it’s about
connecting people with the
reality that if they step up
to take action, good
things will happen. This
is an education for
everybody.” – Andre Agassi
• As an elite athlete, you’re in a unique position to help others .
As an athlete, your fans look up to you both on and off the
field . You have a powerful ability to help others, and to
inspire others to do the same .
• You don’t have to be a Superstar to make an impact . Every
athlete – young or old, superstar or unknown rookie — has
the opportunity to impact those around them and make a
difference in the lives of those in need .
• Your time is as valuable as your money . Monetary donations
can go a long way, but a personal connection with someone in
need can last a lifetime .
• Be a Part of the Team . As you know, it takes a team to reach
the top of your game . Athletes for Hope is a free service
dedicated to providing philanthropic athletes with the support
and resources they need .

“Along the way there will be
victories and defeats. There are
going to be survivors and people
who aren’t going to make it. My goal
and my responsibility are to make
sure that we don’t forget ... how
devastating cancer has been. I can
help change that.” – Lance Armstrong
Giving is most effective when you truly care about
the cause, when you have a passion . Don’t know
what your passion is? We’re here to help you
figure it out!
• There are many different ways to help – and a
little time can go a long way, so as you’re trying
different things you can easily impact hundreds,
even thousands of people who need you the most .
– Mentor or Tutor
– Make an appearance
At a summer camp, a fundraiser, or a
playground – just by showing up you can
have an incredible impact .
– Appear on posters or in public-service
announcements
– Be a spokesperson
Why Give baCk?

The Goal
“Once I leave this earth, I know
I’ve done something that will
continue to help others.”
–Jackie Joyner-Kersee
• How does it help? Philanthropy
makes concrete, positive changes in
the world:
– Blood donations save 4 million
lives a year
– $50 can provide antibiotics for
nearly 20 children
– At-risk teens are 46 percent less
likely to use drugs if they’re in a
mentor program

The
Goal
There are thousands of worthwhile charities designed to help every cause
imaginable, so it’s important to think carefully before you decide to give .
• All organizations are different; we‘ll help you to think about these things
in order to choose:
– Size, location, local or national, new or well-established
– Who does the organization work with?
– How do you want to help – appearance, spokesperson, donation, etc .?
• We’ll look into the organizations to ensure that they’re a good fit for you
and that their mission and commitment ideas match yours .

The Players“It’s a lot greater to give than to
receive, I’ll tell you that. Giving people
hope and opportunity, even if it’s for
five minutes, is so fulfilling.” – Mia Hamm

“There were a lot of people who contributed
to my success as a person as well as a player.
Without those people, I wouldn’t be sitting in
the position that I’m sitting in today. I think
that it’s extremely important for people to
realize all of the things that other people do
for them.” – Alonzo Mourning
“We all probably regret the same thing in life,
not starting our foundations earlier. Athletes
have real short windows. Those windows need
to be maximized. We have the heart and desire
to give.” – Jeff Gordon
