sCHOOl niCknaMe “Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Cen-

tral Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Central Oklahoma plays its home games at Tom Thompson Field, located just east of Hamilton Field House on campus. The field is named for UCO graduate Tom Thompson, who donated funds to help start the soccer program in 1998,

and it now ranks as one of the finest soccer facilities in NCAA Division II after undergoing a massive renovation four years ago.

UCO has enjoyed great success on its home field, entering the 2016 season with a glittering 131-31.9 record in the facility, a winning percentage of .792. The Bronchos played their first home game on Sept. 13, 1998, beating St. Gregory’s 3-0, and went 7-1-1 at home last year.

UCO has also played 15 home games away from Tom Thompson Field, having gone 12-2 at Wantland Stadium and 0-1 at the Edmond Soccer Club Field. The Bronchos drew what was then an NCAA Division II-record 2,139 fans to Wantland Stadium in 2008 in a game against Dallas Baptist and went 8-2 while playing all 10 home games there in 2010.

Mike CookMike Cook has been with the Central Oklahoma soccer program since its inception, hav-

ing built the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II power.Cook came to UCO in 1998 and has guided the Bronchos to an amazing 265-95-27 record

over the past 18 years. He has a 23-year women’s record of 353-117-258, ranking among the Division II coaching leaders in all-time wins and winning percentage.

Mike has led UCO six regular-season conference titles, five league tournament crowns and 10 national playoff appearances. He earned Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year accolades six times and was named Midwest Regional Coach of the Year twice.

Cook has coached 90 All-Conference players, 56 All-Region players and seven All-Americans during his highly-successful tenure at Central.

The veteran coach led UCO to an 11-9 record in its first year in 1998 and the Bronchos went 13-5-1 in 1999 while breaking into the Division II top 20 rankings for the first time.

UCO finished 21-3 in 2000 in winning both the regular season and league tournament titles to make its first national playoff appearance, beating Colorado Mesa in the first round before falling to eventual champion UC San Diego in the quarterfinals.

The Bronchos followed that with a 15-6 campaign in 2001, then won the LSC Tournament and made the national playoffs again in 2002 during a 20-3 campaign. UCO made a repeat national tournament appear-ance in 2003 in going 15-5-2, then went 13-6-2 and won the LSC title in 2004.

Cook led the Bronchos to a 16-3-2 record and a second consecutive league crown in 2005 before losing a shootout in the playoffs. UCO captured a third straight LSC championship in 2006 and lost in a shootout in the national tournament to finish 18-3-1.

The Bronchos claimed a fourth consecutive confer-ence regular-season title and made its longest Division II playoff run in 2007, winning two games to make the Sweet 16 during a 19-5-1 campaign.

UCO had its four-year string of league titles ended in 2008 in finishing 13-6-3, but rebounded the next year to go 14-6-3 in winning the LSC Tournament crown and making it back to the national tournament. The Bronchos went 11-8-1 in 2010 and finished 15-4 in 2011 to qualify for the national playoffs.

Central was runner-up in its first season in the MIAA in 2012 and made it back to the national tournament in finishing 16-3-3. The Bronchos had their first-ever losing season (9-10-2) in 2013, but rebounded strong last season to go 14-5-3 and make it to the second round of the Division II playoffs.

Mike came to UCO after a stellar career at Southern Nazarene. He was an assistant coach for SNU’s men from 1987-92 before serving as head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams from 1993-97, going 88-22-1 with a pair of third-place NAIA national finishes with the women and 58-44-2 with the men.

Cook was a two-time All-Southwest Region performer as a player at SNU and spent nine years in profes-sional soccer. He’s a member of the United Soccer Leagues Hall of Fame.

A native of Toronto, Canada, Mike received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SNU. He’s married (Sandy) and has two children (Cody and Taylor).

Central Oklahoma is poised to make another run at the NCAA Division II national tourna-ment with a group of seniors ready to lead and a loaded sophomore class already with experience in a tough Mid-America Intercollegiate Athtletics Association.

The Bronchos return a tremendous 21 players -- including eight starters -- from last season’s 12-5-3 squad.

Veteran head coach Mike Cook is excited for both the returning players but the newcomers as well.

“We’re approaching the 2016 soccer season with a lot of anticipation and excitement,” said Cook, who is 265-95-27 in 18 years at UCO. “We’ve added some solid recruits to a very sea-soned returning core of players who had a very strong spring.

“A preseason trip really provided a great time of team bonding and allowed us to get a little extra work in before our actual training camp. As usual, the goal is to try to win the MIAA and continue on as far as possible.”

Here is a position-by-position look at the Bronchos:

ForwardReigning MIAA Freshman of the Year Katie

Killion is already the leader of this group. But the depth Cook has up top is scary. Darla Hyde, Falyn Dodd, Blaire Ferguson and Morgan Cherry return along with the addition of Oklahoma Bap-tist transfer Mikayla Lowery, who was freshman of the year in the Great American Conference two years ago.

Cook Says: “We are extremely excited about the possibilities up front as there is a lot of speed, quickness and potential. There is no doubt that these forwards can create a lot of opportunities but it will be a matter of seeing who can actually finish those chances and be the difference maker.”

MidFielderSenior Emily Precure is back after missing

2015. She scored 11 points with three goals and five assists two years ago in earning second-team All-Region honors.

Caitlin Moore, Casey Herndon and Victoria Neblett stepped into big roles in the midfield as freshman last year. Incoming freshman Michelle Molen, Haley Post and redshirt Piper Canon will all be vying for minutes as well this year.

Cook Says: “The midfield will be another area of strength with returning senior redshirt Emily Precure and sophomore Caitlin Moore. It will be important to find the right mix in the midfield to coordinate the transitions from back to front.”

deFeNderSeniors Ashley McDaniel and Kenzie Sublett

are the leaders in the back. Junior Courtney Essary stepped up last year as well to boast a backline that helped in the Bronchos notching six shutouts.

Camrie Hurst and newcomers Kelsey Gordon and Paige Patterson should also push for playing time right away.

Cook Says: “Our back line should be solid again.”

goalkeeperJunior Elle Stover is back and has plenty of

competition by her side in sophomores Ally Salls and Lexi Bates.

Stover posted seven shutouts with 33 saves two years ago. She only had one shutout last year but she made 63 saves in 16 games helping the Bronchos to eight of the team’s 12 wins.

Cook Says: “We have solid potential with three returning goalkeepers. Elle Stover, Ally Salls and Lexi Bates have been working hard all summer and are ready for the challenge of being the No. 1. We are looking for confidence and stability.”

Central Oklahoma put together another stellar season in 2015, finishing 12-5-3.

The Bronchos roared out of the gates with a 4-0 win over Concordia-St. Paul to open the season. Despite losing the next two matches, UCO wasn’t deterred and remained focus on putting together a strong campaign.

UCO opened play at Tom Thompson soccer field with a 2-0 shutout of Southern Nazarene and followed that with a 1-0 blanking of rival North-eastern State.

The Bronchos slipped up on the road at South-west Baptist but returned to form upon returning to Edmond.

UCO tied Missouri Western State before beating Northwest Missouri State to remain unbeaten on campus.

The Bronchos then took that solid form on the road and picked up wins at Washburn and Emporia State.

UCO’s unblemished home record came to a close at the hands Nebraska-Kearney in early October, but the Bronchos rebounded with a quick turn-around win over Fort Hays State.

UCO lost on the road to Central Missouri on Oct. 16 and that would be the last loss of the season for the Bronchos.

Central then tied with Lindenwood before realing off four straight wins to end the season. It then got its payback over Nebraska-Kearney, avenging its only home loss of the season with a 3-1 drubbing of the Kearney in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association conference tournament.

UCO then tied Northeastern State 1-1 in the second round of the tournament before falling to the RiverHawks 4-3 on penalties.

Quinn Tookey wrapped up a brilliant career with the Bronchos playing in each of the 20 games for her senior season.

The All-MIAA first-team selection scored one goal and added an assist.

Paige Matacchirera also played in all 20 games. The senior scored two goals and added an assist.

Mike Cook’s freshman class jumped right into the action last year, led by Katie Killion.

Killion played in all 20 games, starting 18, and led the team in goals with 10. The Broken Arrow native also led the team in assists with six.

Defender Camrie Hurst also played in all 20 games as a freshman, and she started in each of them too. Others including Falyn Dodd, Victoria Neblett, Morgan Cherry, Caitlin Moore and Casey Herndon played frequent minutes.

The junior class of Ashley McDaniel and Kenzie Sublett were solid as well. McDaniel tallied three assists and Sublett had two, as well as scoring one goal.

The sophomore class in 2015 was small, but solid in their contributions.

Elle Stover started 15 games in goal for the Bron-chos, and made 63 saves.

Courtney Essary scored one goal while playing valuable minutes and Darla Hyde provided equal contributions.

The MIAACentral Oklahoma is in its fifth year as a mem-

ber of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, perhaps the premier conference in NCAA Division II.

The MIAA is made up of a 14 institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma and was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Inter-collegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100-plus years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team cham-pionships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently con-ducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for ti-tles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athlet-ic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri and Northwest Mis-souri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central

Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commis-sioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph Mc-Fillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded Mc-Fillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Ke-arney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which left 14 schools in the MIAA.
