sChool nICkname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Cody whITe

In his third year atop the Central Oklahoma program is Cody White, who has won 82 games in two sea-sons at the helm.

Whi t e has l ed the Bronchos to back-to-back 41-win seasons and con-secutive trips to the NCAA Division II national tourna-

ment in going 82-37.Cody came to UCO in 2012 as the program’s

first-ever full-time assistant coach and helped guide the Bronchos to the first women’s national championship in school history in 2013.

He played a key role during a sensational season that saw UCO claim the Mid-America Intercolle-giate Athletics Association crown in its first year in the league and then go a perfect 9-0 in NCAA post-season play to take the national title, clipping Kutztown 5-2 in a thrilling finals contest to end a 51-11 campaign.

Cody and head coach Genny Stidham were selected the Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches As-sociation after the season.

White was named interim head coach on Aug. 9, 2013 after Stidham took over at Texas Woman’s and went on to lead the Bronchos to another out-standing season in 2014.

UCO finished runner-up in the MIAA regular season standings and earned an at-large bid into the national tournament, going 1-2 in the Central Regional in finishing the season 41-17.

The Bronchos came back with another banner campaign last spring as White led UCO to a second straight MIAA runner-up finish. The Bronchos made the program’s fourth consecutive trip to the national tournament and ended with a 41-20 record.

Cody came to UCO after serving as assistant baseball and softball coach at Edmond Memorial

Jon hunTer

Now in his third year as Central Oklahoma’s top assistant coach is Jon Hunter, who came to the Bronchos in the fall of 2013 from Edmond North High School.

Hunter has helped lead UCO to an 82-37 record the past two years, with the Bronchos having had back-to-back 41-win seasons while making consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Jon was an assistant basketball coach for the Huskies from 1999-04, helped with baseball from 2004-13 and was a softball assistant from 2008-13.

Hunter helped lead the ENHS baseball squad to the 2012 Class 6A state championship and he was the interim softball head coach in the fall of 2012 when the Huskies captured the Class 6A state title.

A native of Clinton, Hunter played collegiately at St. Gregory’s before graduating from UCO.

Jon and his wife, Traci, have two daughters (Abby and Halle).

kelsey berlIn

Helping the Central Oklahoma program as a student assistant coach in 2016 is Kelsey Berlin, who finished her playing career with the Bronchos last season.

Berlin spent just one year at UCO after transferring in from Division I Arkansas. She pitched in 31 games with 20 starts in 2015, finishing 11-8 with two saves and a 3.24 earned run average while throwing three shutouts

and striking out 77 batters in 140 1/3 innings.Kelsey was a prep star at Northwest High School in Wichita, Kan.

before spending two years at Butler County Community College. She went 15-6 with five shutouts and three saves there while also batting .370 with 24 doubles, nine home runs and 79 runs batted in.

Berlin spent the 2014 season at Arkansas, seeing limited action for the Razorbacks.

Kelsey is completing work on her kinesiology degree.

good mix of experienced veterans and talented newcom-ers will keep Central Oklahoma in the upper echelon of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and NCAA Division II in 2016, with the Bronchos ready

to make another run at the national championship.UCO has won 179 games while making four straight trips to

the Division II playoffs -- winning the national title in 2013 -- and the return of nine proven players from last year’s 41-20 squad gives the Bronchos a sensational base to build around.

Add in a two-year starter back after missing last season to injury along with eight talented newcomers and it’s easy to see why UCO will be a prime national contender this spring.

“We’re excited about what we can do this year with the team we have,” said head coach Cody White, who is 82-37 entering his third year at the helm. “We have a lot of returning players who know what it takes to succeed at a high level and we’ve got some new players who will be hard to keep off the field.”

UCO only has to replace its starting center fielder and first baseman from last year’s every-day lineup, with those holes expected to be filled by returning starters switching positions.

Leading the large number of returners are a pair of All-Region performers -- senior third baseman Ashton Smith and junior catcher/first baseman Asheigh Tramel.

The Bronchos also have back three second-team All-MIAA performers in senior second baseman Ally Dziadula, sophomore shortstop Morgan Heard and senior outfielder Brooke Zukerman.

Sophomore outfielder Shelby Carel started most of last sea-son and junior catcher Tori Collet returns from injury, while senior Nicole Brady and junior Jessi Walker are back to lead the pitching staff.

“Our offense should be really good,” White said. “We have good power and speed, so scoring runs shouldn’t be an issue. The key for us will be playing good defense and getting consis-tent pitching.”

Here’s a look at the 2016 Bronchos:

CaTCher

The Bronchos have a great situation behind the plate, with junior Tori Collet set to return to the starting lineup after the 2014 MIAA Defensive Player of the Year missed last season to injury. Hard-hitting freshman Halley Randolph will vie for playing time and junior Ashleigh Tramel is also available after starting all last year in Collet’s absence.

fIrsT base

Junior Ashleigh Tramel switched positions and is expected to take over here after earning honorable mention All-America

season ouTlook

A

Brooke Zukerman

honors at catcher last year when she hit .324 with 16 home runs and 53 runs batted in. Freshman Carli Jones is also fully capable of handling the job, depending on what UCO does with Tramel.

seCond base

Back for her fourth year of starting duty at second is senior Ally Dziadula, a key offensive catalyst throughout her career who is expected to take over as the lead-off hitter. She hit .320 with 14 doubles, nine homers and 53 RBI last year and is in line to set several school career records. Junior transfer Lexi Watson can help out if needed.

shorTsToP

Morgan Heard is solidly entrenched here after taking over an immediate starting role as a true freshman last year.

She enjoyed a fabulous season, batting .349 with a school-record 21 doubles, 10 homers and team-

high 54 RBI, and is also a defensive standout. Junior Lexi Watson provides depth.

ThIrd base

Senior Ashton Smith has started the last two years at the hot corner and is favored to

retain her position after hitting a team-high .383 with 13 doubles and 46 RBI last season. Junior

college transfer Lexi Watson can’t be overlooked and will certainly push the issue.

ouTfIeld

Plenty of prospects are battling for starting berths, with depth a big luxury. Senior Brooke

Zukerman is the ringleader after batting .327 with 11 homers, 43 RBI and 24 stolen bases

last year and is slated to move to center field after starting in right the past three years. Sophomore Shelby Carel hit .312 with

12 doubles as the main starter in left last season and will look to retain that position, while senior Rachel Harper is poised to take over in right. It will be tough to keep freshmen JoBi Heath and Lauren Kelley out of the lineup, with senior Haley Weathers, sophomore transfer Carrie Abrams and rookie Carli Woolsey also capable of earning playing time.

PITCher

The Bronchos have several options on who to use in the circle, with redshirt freshman Mo Selman ready to make a big impact in a starting role. Senior Nicole Brady went 18-11 with a 3.10 earned run average a year ago and will see plenty of starting ac-tion, while junior Jessi Walker is expected to be used in a variety of ways after going 12-1 with a 4.65 ERA in 2015. Freshman Abbie Lancaster has great potential and could help.

desIGnaTed Player

UCO has a number of players capable of being used here. Ju-nior Lexi Watson may be the leading candidate, though freshman Halley Randolph, senior Ashton Smith and junior Ashleigh Tramel could also be used.

2016 UCO SOFTBALL

UCO went 3-2 at the Missouri Western Invitational on March 20-22 before resuming conference play the following week with a four-game road trip, dropping two close games to Nebraska-Kearney before split-ting a doubleheader at Fort Hays State the next day.

The Bronchos split another road doubleheader three days later at Cameron and then swept a league twinbill at Northeastern State behind a 35-hit assault. UCO opened a 12-game homestand the next day by hosting the RiverHawks for a non-conference doubleheader and again won both games as Ashleigh Tramel belted three homers.

Central outscored Southern Nazarene 29-5 in a doubleheader sweep April 7 before returning to MIAA play three days later with 5-3 and 8-5 wins over Southwest Baptist.

A season-high nine-game winning streak came to a halt the next day with a 7-4 first-game loss to eventual league champion Central Mis-

souri, with the Bronchos taking the nightcap 12-4 in moving to 32-13 overall and 13-5 in the league.

UCO split two games with Washburn April 18 before ending the home schedule the next day against Emporia State. Nicole Brady tossed a four-hitter in an 8-0 first-game shutout and Ally Dziadula hit two homers in a 17-8 second-game romp.

The Bronchos went to Midwestern State April 21 and banged out 34 hits in 18-5 and 5-1 victories before ending conference play with four away games. UCO swept Missouri Southern by a combined 16-1, but ended the regular season with two close losses to Pittsburg State.

Central went to Overland Park, Kan. for the MIAA Tournament and fell to Emporia State 7-4 in the first round. The Bronchos stayed alive with an 11-6 come-from-behind win over Washburn before being eliminated by Northwest Missouri 2-1.

UCO earned an at-large bid into the Central Re-gional and opened with a 4-1 victory over Winona State on Morgan Heard’s three-run homer, but man-aged just nine hits in dropping back-to-back games to Augustana (5-1) and East Central (4-1).

Central Oklahoma rode a potent offense to its fourth straight national tournament appearance in 2015 while also reaching the 40-win mark for the fourth consecutive year.

The Bronchos were just 8-5 a month into the season, but put together three winning streaks of seven-plus games the rest of the way in finishing 41-20 while setting single-season school records for hits, runs scored and runs batted in. UCO tied for second in the Mid-America Intercol-legiate Athletics Association before going 1-2 in the Central Regional.

“We struggled some with consistency and lost a lot of tough games, but it was still a good season,” said second-year head coach Cody White, whose team went 4-8 in one-run games. “We played really well for stretches and did a lot of good things.”

The Bronchos opened the season at the NFCA First-pitch Classic in Tucson, Ariz. in early February and went 4-2 in that power-packed event, highlighted by a 2-1 win over eventual national runner-up Dixie State on Brooke Zukerman’s two-run home run in the top of seventh inning.

UCO went 4-2 again the next weekend at the Rat-tler Invitational in San Antonio, Texas and then split a road doubleheader with near-by Oklahoma Christian, taking an 11-9 second-game win behind two Emily Ditmore homers.

The Bronchos opened MIAA play and made their home debut March 7 with a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Missouri behind a 27-hit, five-homer at-tack before taking a twinbill from Missouri Western the next day.

Central took two non-conference road games from Rogers State on March 10 to stretch its winning streak to seven straight, but that ended four days later with a 7-5 first-game loss to league rival Lincoln. The Bronchos rebounded with a 15-0 rout in the nightcap as Jessi Walker threw a five-inning no-hitter.

The Bronchos moved on to Lindenwood the next day, winning the opener 2-0 on Kelsey Berlin’s four-hitter and taking the second game 8-4 in improving to 18-6 overall and 7-1 in the league.

Central Oklahoma is in its fourth year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of be-ing one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts champi-onships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in vol-leyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II confer-ence changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics As-sociation.

The decision to make the change origi-nated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

Mid-AMericA intercollegiAte Athletics AssociAtion State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in

2007.Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July

of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Bo-erigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri South-ern and Missouri Western began competi-tion in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was re-placed by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006,

Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the conference with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate members who compete in women’s basketball.
